In the past I have always brought the oil temp to running temp to due an oil change.
Do you do this when changing the synthetic oil?
The reason I'm asking … in most of the videos on changing the oil on a 2017 Ram , they suggest using a zip lock bag to catch the oil from the filter location .. wouldn't hot oil melt the bag ?
Thanks … I'm just trying not to cause a mess when I change the oil..

I use Mobil1 5W-20 synthetic and when i change the oil, i let the truck run for only a couple minutes and then let it sit for around 5 or so minutes while i get the tools needed. I drain the oil, which is thin enough and then let it sit a while to drain everything. After 15 minutes or so i put the bolt back in and fill. No reason to bring it to operating temp. Synthetic is actually thin enough at 80-90 degrees. You dont need to run it at all, but i do anyway when i bring the truck to the backyard to change it

Like jmd4100 said, the only reason to to heat up the oil is so it will thin out and drain faster.

Don’t do it cold and don’t do it hot. Doing it hot is not necessary AT ALL.

The MAIN reason to let your engine run for 1-2 min before the change is to get the insolubles that have settled in the engine to go back into suspension in the oil. Then when you drain it you get as much of the bad stuff out as you can. Including moisture.

If you are planning an oil analysis you should change the oil after a nice long 30 min highway drive to get the moisture out.

After doing the oil change on your 1500, and after you clean up the mess, go lay under a 2500 and look where the filter is.

You have just found you next truck! No extra wrist and 3rd elbow needed. No bag-o-oil either.

No frigging joke. I have a 2500 with 5.7 and it’s easy as heck. No mess. Did my wife’s 1500 yesterday. What a damn joke. Oil everywhere:banghead: stupid it’s the same engine too lol.

Or get another 1500 with the Pentastar, with the oil filter on top, and very easy to access

I never used a bag. I drove from house to shop 2-3 min. Parked lifted hood and then got stuff ready to change it. Maybe 10 min before I pulled the plug. Not to hot to change by hand and then clean up with break clean

That chit will grow on concrete! In about 1973-73, my old man had pallets of it delivered. Guess who got to punch out 40,000 little ROUND holes in hard ground to plant the SQUARE plugs in.
That was a Summer vacation to remember for a H.S. Freshman!

Do you remember running a quart of mystery oil before an oil change ...
I never bought into that but I know a few guys that believed in it with every fiber of their being!

C'mon, it's just an oil change. If your oil is so thick you need to dilute it with a product with "Marvel" and "Mystery" in it's name, you should have changed it sooner.

I knew one that swore by adding Kerosine or diesel fuel and running it for 10 minutes. That's absurd! Those are astringents that break down an oil's ability to bond. About the dumbest thing you can do to an engine. He did that every 3k miles and was proud of it. He didn't like it much when I reminded him he just did the equivalent to putting 5k miles of wear on the engine every time. Some people you just can't help.[emoji857]
