Rookie mistake: while doing an oil change I forgot to change the filter before I started putting fresh oil back in. So far I poured in 1 gallon.

It appears as though the oil filter rides pretty high on the side of the engine. Can I change just the filter without emptying all of that fresh oil out first?

On most engines, no oil will go into the filter until you start it and the oil pump pushes oil into it. I have no idea if that’s the case with the CTD though.

Which is why many folks fill the new filter with fresh oil before installing it (to reduce the amount of time the engine runs before it receives fresh oil.)

Until I owned a CTD I never filled the new filter with oil before installing it….and none of my other engines have ever displayed any ill effects.

My 2006 owners manual mentioned filling filter before install, but nothing about doing so for my 2022 CTD...
