Ive done a search and ended up with mixed answers on this through all the threads ive read so I will ask it based on my conditions and truck.

I have a 2012 ram 1500 5.7. It has right under 50,000 on it right now and im due for an oil change.

For longetivety, and fuel milaege, what would yall recommend? Im pretty much stuck between royal purple or amsoil unless theres another more recommended that I do not know about.

What filter?

So many options and opinions. Both oils listed are great. Take your pick or whichever is cheaper. I use mobile1 myself. Filters are the same thing. I use Mobil1 filters usually as they are a bit larger. Lots of good filters just stay away from the cheapie frams!

^^X2 I agree. whatever you go with, change the oil as much as you can. Keep the VVT system clean and happy.

For longetivity, any oil that meets spec. The motor will out run the body. The hemi is well built and will go many hundreds of thousands of miles on conventional at 3k oil changes.

Obviously synthetic is better at everything from very cold starts to extreme high temp performance and everything inbetween. Also if your motor is in good shape you can extend your intervals a bit and make it more cost effective.

As for fuel economy it would make a noticeble difference if you went from 15w40 to 0w20 but if you are going from 5w20 syn to 0w20 syn you will not notice anything to write home about.

As for brands im on the Pennzoil platinum/ultra train, but really any name brand syn will do the trick. Some will even attest to years of walmart supertech syn use with great results.
Read though the last half (lol) of the syn thread in burlas sig and you will have a good idea of the different attributes of different oils.

I'm the odd Duck out of the whole bunch but that is the way I like it... I use the Fram Ultra Filter.

Ultra is 99%+ @ 20 Microns--->Also Ultra is 80% at 5 microns which is awesome!
Amsoil is 98.7% @ 20 Microns

So it is right there with the Amsoil Filters. With half the cost!

This was info taken on 09/23/14 so the info is up to date.

I have gone over 300K miles on 2 autos on M1! It has gained my respect and loyalty.

Good Luck on Your Quest! Alot of Good Advice above!!

0W-20 is Perfect for Winter Use!!!

Nope! I have had M1 AFE in my Ram for the past month... 0W-20 is the same as 5W-20 once the oil is at operating temp... the 0W comes in at start up.. Only!!

I will use 0W-20 Year Round.

The only thing that will help with fuel mileage is your foot. Lighten up :)

On he M1 site they claim 0w20 AFE can gain "up to 1.2%" better fuel economy.

Say you do 30k miles per year at 16 mpg at 4$ per gallon = 1875 gallons x 4$ = 7500$
Now 30k at 16.192 (1.2% more) at 4$/gallon = 1852.8 gallons x 4$ = 7411 $

7500 - 7411= a grand total of 89$ saved

So yes, someone that does lots of miles would save a very small amount of money in fuel.
How much you actually save will depend on how many miles you do , driving habits and conditions.

I like Mobil1, and MicroGreen filters. I don't know how effective the filters are, but they have parallel 2-3 micron filtration which in theory is cool. I am about due for an oil change, so I am going to send out to Blackstone for an oil analysis, and see what they have to say. I would say that is one of the only ways to really test them out... Data...

Yes, i was thinking of you when i wrote that :p

Yeah, Amsoil, RP may be better who but who really knows.
This is actually my first vehicle to run synthetic oil in. I really do it for the hemi tick and be able to go longer with the 7 qts..

Never been a huge believer of synthetic oil. Grand Prix has 86K using dino oil its whole life. Never had a single problem. Still original motor.

My S10 had 160K before I sold it using the cheapest oil I could find..lol
