Small price to pay for great sound quality!

Jk, thanks for the heads up actually. I never considered that. Guess I'll have to keep a 18mm socket with me at all times.

Ok, I couldnt wait until tuesday. Had a deep tissue massage sunday and am sore as fawk so i skipped the gym and decided to get this bish bumpin last night.

Dont beleive i posted this but these are the DLS mids as they sit now...

A500CCF5-6232-407A-92DF-9A41D28C35B3_zps4y9rzbjc.jpg

I picked up a set of hybrid audio technology L3s to take their place. :rockit:

Weather started getting nasty so there arent many pics. All i needed was another ground for mono amp as all the other wires were already in place. Filled box with polyfill and got some terminals in and ran wire.

Pretty pumped that both amps fit side by side under the small seat in the back. Dont mind the birds nest, its only temporary...

Side note: Found the first gripe about the amps. To set them up you have to play a CD, that comes with them, in order to have the gain levels set properly. What it does is shut off outgoing signal to speakers and you have to turn volume all the way up while turning the gain knob until a check appears on the screen. Easy enough, right? No, if you have speakers hooked to head unit, like my tweeters and rear doors, It sends a screeching high pitched tone that would damage them so I had to unhook everything running off the head unit. Painintheassannoying****thatmademewanttothrow****...anyway

Once sub was installed, even with rubber gasket, i was scared it wasnt sealed tight and i was right. I could hear air pouring out from around the sub. So I made a 1/8" MDF spacer

Didnt even get a pic of it installed, was too excited. I was worried that 500 watts wouldnt cut it for me but since im over the windshield shaking bass days, its PERFECT! Sub gets plenty loud enough while still blending with the front stage almost perfectly. (still some tuning to be done). Its hard to explain but its almost sounds like there is no sub back there so I turned the music down and was like where did all the bass go? Kinda sounds like all the bass is coming from the front but after driving a few days with no sub im positive it isnt. I can say this is hands down the cleanest best sounding sub ive owned. I tried to get a video but the radio sounds like $hit, I cant record while listening t ipod, and i dont own a single CD. Ill use the wifeys phone and get a vid soon.

Now were rockin, time to make it look good...

"Amp Rack" i guess you can call it, will basically mirror the side the sub is on once its done.

Sqaures are deadener I cut the same size as the amps to see how i will arrange them. will most likely trim the front lip a little and put them side by side like in the pic above.

Miles ahead of you my man. Sounds like Phils standing on my dashboard.

Not sure if they spent more on recording or what changed, but the drums on basically the whole "great southern trendkill" album makes my pants get tighter:rockit::rockit:

A guy that lives around me is paying me to do a blowthrough in his single cab ram. he wants 3- 15"s firing into the cab off 7000 watts. gonna be pretty insane. Its also something ive never done before, should be interesting. Ill let u know how that goes.

Its crazy how loud systems can get in today's vehicles. That Challenger was hitting 155db on music.

Heres something I wanted to share. Its the very first thing i did after i got the truck...

Pioneer AVH-x4600bt. One of the things that attracted me to this unit was Appradio. Its made to operate with the iphone. With a certain $50 cable (not included) you can basically operate the phone through the head unit. Theres certain apps you need to download in order for it to work and since its relatively new, there arent many but a few are pretty sweet.

my favorite... MyPv.

Using the iphone for signal, you can create a playlist of youtube videos and watch the video to the song youre listening to (hopefully you got grandfathered into the unlimited data plan like i did!...

Hopefully these vids work...

List to the left is my video playlist...

Another cool and extremely safe and totally necessary aspect is the ability to drive and surf the internet...

These vids are really pointless for displaying the quality of sound but...meh

PS...seems you need to make it full screen after you click on the pic in order to see it. for me atleast

Love this build...you're doing great work!!!
Iam surprised you went with a aluminum-domed tweeter over the DLS silk domed tweeter.
I read how they did not have grills and were beat up...but being a metal fan (kuddos!!:)) I figured the silk dome would have a more acceptable sound for the type of music you like?
Iam interested in hearing your impressions on the dedicated midrange firing into the windshield....you should get a nice, high soundstage with that location but you will be battling reflections, but that can be delt with.
Time alignment?

Thanks man.

Ive always liked my highs on the brighter side, personal preference I guess. Ive had a few different sets of soft dome tweeters in my last vehicle (although none were quality as DLS) and i was never blown away. Something about these stuck with me since i heard them years ago so I figured what the hell.

As far as the mids firing into the windshield, it def wouldnt be my first choice but trying to keep the truck as stock as possible it was an obvious choice. With that being said, id be lying if the thought of building a set of a pillars to house them hadnt been on my mind since firing them up for the first time. The sound stage is nice and high. almost too high. At the volume i like, LOUD, the 3.5"s dont play too well under 350-400ish hz so that helps keep the stage down some. Ive got some HAT L3s on the way so well see how they work out

With this setup, there is no dedicated time alignment control like a dedicated DSP or my old pioneer 80PRS had. I have the fader and 8 band eq of the pioneer and with the JBLs I can adjust output gain, frequencies, and slope levels for each particular channel witch helps a little. I just accepted the fact that ill prob never have a perfectly centered (to the driver) sound stage.

I wont be competing or anything so for simplicity sake and just liking loud clean music, i couldnt have hoped for much more so far.

Sounds like a good plan...and I agree, the dash makes perfect sense for a mid range especially when you're going for a stealthy install. I know a few guys with mid ranges in that location on their 3-way front stage and it works fine for them. The L3's are great speakers too. You can always do pillars at a later time too...
Seams like you have a good plan, you know what you want, and are doing a great job making it work out! I'll continue watching for updates...
Again, nice work!

Me either LOL... I always get these big ideas in my head then wind up having to dumb em down when it comes time to execute.

I think this time the vision in my head is achievable with a little patience.
