Just honestly noticed this sound recently. I'm about 4k into a redline 5w30 oil change. The sound is more bottom end than anything else. I'm not sure if this is piston slap or lifters. I figure the lifters would be louder on the top. But it sounds quiet up top.

How many miles on the truck? Sound change with rpm? What’s your oil pressure? Any smoke on acceleration or rough running/idleing? What all has been done to the truck if anything?

Sound does not change with acceleration. You dont hear the slapping unless idle. Oil pressure is between 40 to 50 psi. Depends on the temperature. Truck has just shy of 129k miles. No modifications to the truck. I really haven't noticed any smoke when accelerating. I'm not sure on the rough idle, rpms stay constant and do not fluctuate. I maintain everything the best to my ability.

I'm sure my exhausts manifold bolts are bad. But I dont think that sound has anything to do with that.

The slap isn't a constant slap. It has a rhyme where it slap, slap, slap, pause, repeat

Unfortunately sounds like lifters to me, but ur right I would think that’d be heard better at the top. I have piston slap at warm up until engine gets to operation g temp and it’s a very prominent hollow noise . Nothing like urs. Yours is def more of a tapping noise.

The truck still runs and idles fine. I just recently noticed the sound. It was similar to what it sounded prior to redline almost. As mentioned I'm about 4k into redline. What should the average life expectancy of that oil be?

you are best to spend the $38 with tbn to get a used oil analysis from blackstone. they will tell you everything you need to know abiut the oil and will let you know if it is safe to extend oci. you are safe 5k def. may want to change out earlier if you tow a lot. im going to change out at 5k just because its the first change over from mopar. oll do a uoa and see how it looks. then do uoa every other oci. should have no problems going 7500. i dont tow.

i know guys have commented that it can get louder before it quiets down on the redline, but most comments were geared towards giving it a 1000 miles to do its thing (the oil). may be worth commenting in the synthetic thread to get some conversation going about this. some really smart guys frequent that thread (not that there are not any in here : )
