2012 1500 Outdoorsman with 5.7 Hemi. It has thrown this code twice now. What I've been able to read so far points toward either the thermostat or the coolant temperature sensor. What's weird is that it's an inconsistent problem- most of the time the engine heats up to a normal position on the regular temp gauge in the cluster, and the coolant temp according to the EVIC is 195F. But occasionally, the coolant temp won't get above around 170F (this seems to happen after sitting 12+ hours and with an ambient temp in the low 30s).
What I'm wondering is- do both the temp gauge and the EVIC output for coolant temp work off the same sensor?
Any thoughts on whether or not it's the sensor or the thermostat starting to fail? Either one isn't a huge deal (or expense) to replace, but I'd rather not spend time and money replacing parts that are still working. The fact that the problem is so intermittent has me scratching my head....
