Hi all,
On the Fourth of July, a rogue firework dinged my driver's side driver's door. Luckily it fell under a comprehensive claim so I took it to Kadels Auto Body in Tigard, OR. I have now been back to this body shop 5 times trying to fix the same problem over and over again.
Visit 1:
The dings were fixed on the first visit where the body shop took off the door handles, RAM and 1500 emblems, etc. sanded, painted, and clear coated almost the entire door. All was fine until a day after I got my truck back. The aftermarket paint, or maybe clearcoat, started to chip/fold along the edges around where the door handle was bolted down. It was like the paint had yet to dry so the pressure the door handle applied to the body caused the soft paint to fold up.
Visit 2:
Among other things, the primary issue was still the paint around the door handle. The body shop didn't repaint but removed the door handle, sanded, clear coated the area. After the repairs the body shop called and I came to pick up and the issue was obviously still there. I guess they were oblivious. Scheduled another visit and asked for my $250 deductible back for their poor workmanship. The answer on that was no.
Visit 3:
Same issue came up just a few days later so the same thing that was done as on the first visit. This time I was told I could get my deductible refunded.
Visit 4:
Same issue still remained after a few days. The body shop had my truck for about 2 weeks this time, as I was out of town, hopefully to allow enough time to harden the paint before bolting the handle on.
Visit 5:
You guessed it! I told the body shop that if they don't fix it this time then I am going to another body shop and they are paying for it. They agreed to that. I asked for them to give me updates every single time something was done, i.e. sanding, painting, clear coat, etc. I visited the first time after they re-painted, looked at it, and pointed out 5 obvious things wrong with the paint. So they sanded and repainted again and I gave the approval to go ahead and reassemble the door after waiting a few days with the truck inside to cure.
Visit 6?
Well, dammit. It came back about 5 days later this time. Just noticed it today. OCTOBER 6TH!!!! 4 MONTHS AFTER THE INITIAL DAMAGE.
I have yet to contact the body shop in hopes to get some advice from this wonderful forum.
1) Is the aftermarket paint the body shop is using flawed?
2) Is the body shop at fault, i.e. cure time, paint methods, etc.?
3) Should I go to a different body shop? After all, they know a lot about the issue. I was told they contacted the paint reps multiple times trying to fix this problem.
The body shop has been very receptive to my criticism and take customer service seriously. However, it is hard not to say their workmanship is not great.
Thanks for any advice or comments,
Aric
