Nova John---If you're going too start doing some serious mod's including a custom tune, and then do some track racing I would strongly suggest you read about some of the problems people have with the driveshafts. I could save you lot of money in the long run.
Jay

He's good Jay,his truck is the earlier 5 speed regular cab shortbox,it's only the later 8 speed regular cab shortboxes that have the driveshaft issue.

Thought driveshaft problems were on newer trucks, mine is a 2011. How much extra hp would a custom tune make over my superchips flash-pak tune. Not looking to race much as our local track closed 2 years ago. Nearest track is almost 2 hours away. Would like to go 13.5, have run 5 runs all 14.01-14.06 in truck. How fast can you go with stock driveshaft? Nova John come from my Nova SS street strip car. Driven to track never towed. Now 2 hours driving a car like that in traffic and on interstate is not fun, so started playing with truck. Air, cruise and over 20 mpg going to track. The k&n drop in, flowmaster hd50 with single exhaust and flash-pak tune on 87 performance tune dropped my quarter mile time by 6 tenths.

Hell man my nearest track is 155 miles from my driveway to the entrance gates and I make it to pretty well every Friday Street Legals in the summer, lol. A custom email tune from somebody like Flying Ryan Hogan (FRP) / Sean Powell (Hemifever) / Jay Greene (Greene Racing) and a set of long tubes should easily put you into the mid 13's at over a 102 mph,if you put some decent drag radials on it.Traction will start to become an issue for you,lol

Right now it has 265/70/17 goodyear sra tires and can walk it out with a 2.05 sixty foot. If I try to bring rpm's up it seems to kill some power on launch. Other problem is shifting 2nd to 3rd so I;m using second prime. Don;t know how much those 5 speeds can take. If left in drive it skips 3rd gear. Goes from 2nd to 4th and drops too much rpm when shifting at 6,000.

Truck has 106,000 miles on it. Probably doesn't help trans. Only tracks open now are for track rental, $200 each and must have at least 10 people. My friend in Delaware said US13 in Delmar had track rentals but theirs is $400.

From a standstill the 5 speed is pretty strong,it's wide open downshifts and wide open runs in overdrive that kill them. What gears does it have? You'll want a set of 17" drag radials to really get good numbers out of it.With a little track prep, like no tailgate /tonnue cover / spare tire and a clean interior with no more then a 1/4 tank of fuel, you should be looking at a low 13

Have 392 gears and tailgate on and spare tire underneath. Also have soft toneau cover and rubber mat and small tool box, oil, antifreeze and trans fluid inside. most runs were with over a half tank of gas. could probably cut 3-400 lbs off truck. Usually go to track alone and have no where to put spare, jack and tools. Do you race your truck? I know the 8 speeds with the 392 gears are a lot quicker. My son has a 2016 and it feels stronger from dead stop. Need traction control as it spins even with limited slip.

Got a few runs on my truck, lol. Mine has over 500 runs under it's belt. I've never lost anything at a track, and I leave my light plant/tires/tools all sitting on the ground in the pits, along with 3 jerry cans full of 94,lol.Maybe my local tracks are an oddball but I've been racing for over 40 years and have always left my extra stuff in the pits. Takes a 15mm and a 18mm socket to pull the pass seat ,it'll turn a light on ,but as soon as you re-install the seat and plug it back in,the light goes off. You're leaving a lot on the table with no prep. You can dump the front swaybar and spare tire at home pretty easily,if you have decent tires the odds of needing the spare are mininiumal. With 3.92's you'll want a set of drag radials for sure.Mickey sells a relatively light 17X9 rim that's affordable, throw a set of their ET Street R's on them and you'll take probably close to a 1/2 sec off your numbers .Scroll down till you find the 17's and you want the 5 on 5.5 versions.

A set of 305/45/17's will work in your case. The 315/50's will fit a 17 X 9 rim pretty easily, but they are about 4lbs heavier per tire, and i'm not sure you'll have enough power to pull them through the top end of the track to justify them .I run the 305's on my truck and it runs uncorrected 12.02's at 112 corrected it's mid 11's ,and pulls mid 1.5 60fts with 3.55's and the 8 speed.

What brand of gas do you use? My tuner suggested BP or Shell. Since there is no BP I tried Shell. While he was dialing in my tune he could tell from the data logs when I had switched to Shell. Though I couldn't tell a difference in-between the brands, the logs showed the truck ran better on Shell.

I knew someone with a hellcat. He ran chevron in his car. After telling him about why I ran Shell he gave Shell a try and with his high performance engine he could tell a difference. Now thats all I use unless I have to use another brand because Shell isn't available.

Shell is all that I use in everything, and the Hemi gets 93, as that is what it is tuned for. When I sent the data log to Sean (hemifever) he said to continue using that gas...good enough for me!

Sean’s the one that told me to use Shell or BP. Since there is no BP’s in the area Shell it is.

I know the voices in my head aren’t real, but man, do they ever come up with some great ideas.

Hey guys so I'm planning on doing a cam install in the near future and since I'm going to be in there I plan on doing lifters, springs, 6.4 oil pump, water pump, ATI damper. My questions are since I'm going to be doing all that work should I go the extra mile and do forged internals right now? Also are there any other parts performance or maintenance wise that would be smart to change out while doing this job? I have a 2014 sport QC with 110,000 miles. I'm already tuned, LT, TB, clutch fan delete, and 180 Tstat. 6.4 intake on delivery truck lol TIA

Jose,

Although forged internals are nice, unless you’re going to put on a turbo or supercharger there’s really no reason to do that. Forged internals wouldn’t hurt and it would freshen the internals up and possibly fix the known piston ring issue, there is still no reason to really spend that kind of money unless you plan on increasing the compression or decreasing it in preparation for a turbo or supercharger.

If your able to do it yourself a set of drop in forged pistons would do some good if you wanted to bump compression or plan mild boost in the future

At some point I do plan on adding a Whipple on it, my end goal is to get closer to the 550hp but I want to make sure that I have everything set to run a Whipple at higher PSI with no worries of blowing up something lol I like to push the envelope on things a little hahah. This is my first build ever and I'm learning as I go, I plan on doing all the work myself so I figured if I'm taking things apart might as well do as much as I can at once.

If you’re going to put a supercharger on the forging the internals and lowering the compression rate is usually the way to go along with 1 7/8” long tube headers. As for exactly how much to lower it, I’d ask an expert about that. I don’t have an exact answer for that number.

Damn. I can't do any of the stuff mentioned here since I purchased an extended 5 year warranty when I bought my "used" 2014 Express last year. About the only performance mod I can think of at the moment is possibly a Sprint Booster that I can unplug and remove if I need to take my Ram into the shop for warranty repairs. Maybe a CAI, but then again I'm not convinced one would really add anything better than my stock air box which already draws cold air from the fender well.
