I just made my last payment on my 2014 6.4 2500 (yay!!) and got to wondering what it was worth. I am blown away to find that it's still worth somewhere in the mid-upper 20s. Between KBB, NADA and looking at various ads, it seems the trade-in is around 25K and dealers have them listed around 30K with similar mileage (73K - Outdoorsman trim).

I paid 39K back in the spring of 2014 so $12,000 depreciation divided by 53 months of use = roughly $225/mo to drive a sweet new truck. Of course, this doesn't include oil changes and tires and whatnot.

I've only had to put one set of tires on after the factory crappers wore out and I guess I've done about 10 oil changes @ about $70 each so that's a couple thousand total. That puts my cost up more like $260/mo. Still not too bad.

Yes they do. I did the same and sourced out a median price my truck (2017 6.4L Laramie Megacab) after 16 months of ownership. I'm down about $5,000. Not bad at all considering the hardest hit depreciative years are 1 and 2. Gas isn't cheap but I own the right tool for the right job. Only 44 more payments too! :p

I too was surprised when I sold my 07 1500 5.7 Mega Cab in 2018. 11 year old truck with 140k miles, but well maintained. Paid $28k for it new. Sold 11 years later $11,500 to,,,CarMax.

Yep they do, pretty much across the board with trucks. All brands for the most part. That's also why I bought new. When I bought my 2015 Silverado new in 2015 the dealer salesman told me flat out he couldn't sell me a 3yr old used one with 36k miles for what I paid for my truck new with the rebates and incentives. Good stuff! Got a great deal on my 17 ram new when I got it in December of 16. Love it!

For me it's like pulling teeth for me to get a good price for my trade in! I get it... but it's not easy. They give you the song & dance well we don't reference by KBB or NADA. I usually tell them if your not gonna give me what my trade is worth your gonna need to take just that much more off of the new truck price or I am walking. Granted it took me nearly 4 months to get the deal I wanted, but I got what I wanted for my trade & got $12,000 off the new one.

Yep - the profit margin dealers expect between trade-in and sales price is ludicrous. I get it that they have to keep the lights on but it's around 8-10K difference on a transaction that they expect. Back in 2014 I was trying to trade in an 06 Duramax (very highly sought after as the last pre-emission diesel) and they offered me 15K. I put it on Craigslist and sold it for 21K in 2 days. I'm sure if I had taken the 15K they'd have put it out on the lot the next day for 25,995.

Nice! Checked mine after having it a year and private sale the average range is still about $2k over what I paid for it. Works for me, especially if it holds that range as I pay it down. ;) But like others I plan to have this a long time unless they do something stupendous with the Gen 5s.

this is good news. Hopefully the trend holds out for another 3-4 years when the new 2500's are out with possibly an 8 speed trans!

yet, nothing beats the value retention on my 07 Tundra. $38K out the door. 7 years later and I think it was 60,000 miles later, got $38K back. of course had to survive a head on collision to get that but still....

walked away from that crash btw.
