So I’ve gotten used to the constant light ticking of the engine, but now I hear new stuff. I tried to get a video of it but it’s really hard to hear.

Normal noise which you can hear in the video is a constant tick tick tick.

The new noise is a deeper tone and sounds more like a knock, and it has consistency but it is more like “knock knock pause knock knock” whereas the normal ticking is constant.

Thoughts?

I don’t mind the ticking, plus I’m planning on doing Redline 5w30 next oil change...concern is for the knock.

From what ive experienced the intermittent knock , which some of my chevy work trucks have and one of my subarus has, is piston slap and usually harmless. A constant knock with perfect intervals would be bad.

How many miles on the truck? How long have you heard a knock? What weight oil?

35,000...just recently, and full synthetic 5w20 pennzoil.

Definitely sounds like in the bottom not the top.

All I can say is the eco diesels (yes I know it's a different engine) went to a heavier oil because of widespread bearings issues. One benefit of gas engines is we can hear what's going on, in a diesel you certainly wouldn't be able to decipher the difference between normal diesel sound and a bearing issue, but we might be able to hear the pending doom before it comes. Before going out of spec with my oil, I would go to dealer and have them listen to it and get a receipt that says as much. You are still under warranty I believe. Just say'n.

Yep. I would be concerned. I agree with the others. Get into dealer and take the time to demonstrate this knock. From what I heard, it does not sound like an internal knock, to me. It sounds like it could be coming from outside of the engine. Something could be lose.

I’ve had it in the dealer before when I first got it for the Hemi tick, and they said the noise was normal.

I am still under powertrain...maybe I’ll just complain again.

You said full sythetic Pennzoil, if that's PP 5/20 mine made the most noise and ran the worst on that. I agree get it to the dealer for their diagnosis but that was just my experience with PP. Also did you change you're own oil or take their word that they put in 5/20? I've had it happen to me that the dealer put 0/20 in my wife's van.

I will add, the noise went away after a few minutes...I was letting the exhaust warm up to re torque bolts, or at least to check the torque.

Dealer changed it, I can only take their word for it. I asked for full synthetic when I dropped it off and they even called an hour later to confirm that I did want full synthetic.

I'd take it back and say, look, it wasn't making this noise before, what did you do? If they give you the age old answer that's normal, which is bs, at least it's documented. If they won't do anything I'd try 5/30 PUP first and see if that helps, at least with the PUP it meets the ms standard. If that does alot to improve you're noise then I'd seriously consider redline. JMO.

It actually did sound like it was coming from the bottom and not the top, what does that mean?

Below the cylinder heads, rod/main bearing, piston wrist pin.
If its more toward the rear of engine maybe cracked flex plate or bolts loose.

I would also go back to the dealer and have everything documented in case everything goes to hell. Have all your oil change receipts in order.

What oil was you running before? At a minimum I'd go back to what you had in it before, at least it wasn't makeing that noise before.
