Hey all, I’ve recently acquired another key fob identical to mine. It was programmed to my buddies old truck which he traded in. Before I get told “no” without any reason from my local stealer-ship.... can it be re-programmed to my truck? TIA.

Yeah, dealer's love to just say no and tell you they'll sell you one for $300. I think a locksmith might be your best bet. I have one that stopped working (mostly - it still registers and clicks the dash lights on but won't unlock the doors). The dealer said nothing can be done but I'm hoping a locksmith can just re-zap it. Like a lot of things, locksmiths are almost more computer programmers these days than key grinders.

The fob will need to be erased before it can be programmed to another truck. There are places online that you can send it to or a locksmith may be able to erase it and program it to your truck as mentioned. Once you get the fob erased you can actually program the key to your truck with the alfa tool as well but you would need to get your 4 digit numeric key code pin from the dealer or there are places on line you get it. I have programmed keys to a few trucks with the tool but they need to be clean fobs. The alfa tool can program them but doesn't have the ability to erase them. Just a few options for you. In your case a locksmith may be your best bet unless you are interested in doing other modifications to your truck in which case I would reccomend checking out the (alfa OBD) thread.

If you can find someone that can actually erase the fob then maybe. Otherwise a used fob that has been previously programmed will not work. Dealers don’t have the ability to erase the fob unless they have the truck at the same time. So trying a locksmith is your best bet, even then it’s likely it won’t work.

It seems like there are tools that have the ability to reset fobs, but they are pretty expensive and only available to locksmiths (and/or a dealer)

Some YouTube videos out there showing how its done with the specialized equipment, depending on your keyfob model.

Surely there is SOME way to do it, I cant see so many being sold on ebay as used if they will never actually work with a different vehicle.
