I started a thread in the introductory section and received some information but I am new ram trucks and need more help.
I have a 2006 ram 1500 2WD std cab truck with a 4.7 V8 and a six-speed manual gear box; the rear end howls and growls like a banshee and I fear the pinion bearing is on its last legs.
The tag is missing from the axle.
Based on a reply to my post, a 12-boltt cover plate on the housing indicates a corporate axle with a 9.25 ring gear and the reply says the optional ratios were 3.21, 3.55 and 3.92.
The reply also said there was a Dana axle but I don't think this is a Dana
I turned the drive shaft and counted the number of rotations of the shaft for 1 wheel revolution and it appears that 3 3/4 turns of shaft equal i turn of the wheel which does not appear to line up with the ratios mentioned in the repaly to my post.
Does the VIN give any hint about ratio?
How can I determine the4 axle ratio so that I can be sure to order the correct parts

any help is greatly appreciated

I need some help because I need to attend to the rear axle before I do too much more damage

Being a 2X4 you can stick any ratio you want in the rear end,but with a 4.7 / 6 speed i'd do 3.92's,which is probably what you have. Have you checked your local market place or wreckers for a complete 3rd gen rear diff with 3.92's,if you can find a lower milege rear diff, with the gears you want,it's not a huge job to swap the complete diff on a driveway on a Saturday.

wrecking (oops) recycling yards around here are disappearing and remaining ones are changing to a u-pill operations. Wrestling a rear axle out of a truck in a wrecking yard without proper jacking and blocking equipment is a dodgy operation at best and risking injury is not really worth it. I will expand my search to find a yard that has what I need but I might also consider repairing the existing rear end; i can pull the axle off and work on it in the garage. I have an old house with an old & small garage and the truck wont fit in the garage.

Thank you for the advice on the axle ratio

sorry for being a pest.

I am new to working on Ram pick ups, or any pickups for that matter as Toyota cars and morotcycles are what I am familiar with
The parts selection thing at a large wreckers website shows 10.5" axle with a 3.73 ratio and 11.5" with a 3.73 ratio among those axles available for 2006 Ram 1500 2WD vehicles

given that when I turn the drive shaft 3.75 turns (roughly) i get one turn of the road wheel, I believe that I have a 3.73 ratio.

The metal tag is missing from the axle housing, there is no sticker in the glove box and I have no build sheet

So now my question is what do the 10.5" and 11.5" numbers refer to?

Take a picture of rear end and post here for us to look at what you have . I should be a 9 1/4 .
Those others you have listed are from 3/4 and 1 ton trucks .
Your 1500with a 4.7 for power uses a 9 1/4 , unless someone did lots of work to convert it, send a pic of the rear cover will do fine for id purposes .

10.5" and 11.5" refer to the diameter of the ring gear, and as stated you probably don't have either of those rear ends. Hit up SGI Salvage in Sask, they ship anywhere.

Right click, select/put pointer on copy image and hit left button, go to post, right click, select paste with the pointer, then left click in thread. Could not be easier.

I have attached a picture of the rear end cover. I have been going on the web sites of a couple of wrecking yards and they make reference, in the list of items that they have in stock, of rear axles with a 3.73 ratio.

Since, when I turn the drive shaft, it takes approximately 3.75 turns of the axle to rotate the road wheel on complete turn and so it would appear that my rear axle is a 3.73.

Am I missing something

I don't think 3.73 was offered in the 1500's AAM corporate 9.25 diff, from what i remember only the 2500's that used the lighter duty 9.25 had 3.73's,and they usually had a 14 bolt cover, but don't quote me on that as i didn't really work on that diff much.

did it come with 17s stock or 20s. almost all 20's got 3.92s but you could order it how you wanted
the usual standard is 3.55
3.21 is usually on flex fuel trucks so very uncommon

He's referring to the rim size on the truck, basically the 17" rims typically cam with 31.5" tires and the 20" rims cam with 33" tires.
