Pulled the rear diff cover off my 15 1/2 ton sport, after it was making a terrible noise when turning. This is what I found. Any advice, or upgrades over the factory LSD I should take advantage of? I had a rear diff oil change about 8 months ago they claim a LSD additive isn’t required with the 75w-150 severe gear oil but it’s the only thing I can think of that would have caused this damage.

The damage pattern looks to me like the differential was trying to lock up as the pinion powered through the ring gear - look at the pattern where the pinion enters the ring, and where it exits.

If this damage was done on just one revolution, there may be something loose in the carrier (a bolt?) that caused the broken spider gear and progressing the to the pinion/ring mesh.

Should be disassembled and evaluated by a failure analysis expert.

I would be looking at the Pinion Nut & seal, where the driveshaft bolts to it
If that nut loosen up, it will destroy a rear end

That may not be your culprit, but i would still check it

How does one check this bolt you all speak of to ensure ours isnt doing the same? Is it on the outside or inside the housing? If that is even the fault but i would like to check mine just in case i may prevent this very thing from happening. Appreciate the help

Nothing to do with additive, but that additive is in every synthetic gear oil unless you specifically order a lube w/o it, and those aren't on the shelf, so likely no issue anyhow.

What was happening at the time it failed? Snow or anything that was slippery and then you all of a sudden got grip?

Whats up with all the bubbles in the left over fluid? Or are we thinking its just fluid that got churned once the failure happened

What kind of driving have you been doing? Off-roading? What's the tire setup? How any miles on it? Spider gears are a weak link in a differential.

An Eaton “ Detroit” tru-trac will make a very good replacement for your situation, maybe a gear ratio change also,if not 4x4.

It's the big nut under the rear u-joint flange, just grab the end of the driveshaft that's on the rearend side , when the rear tires are off the ground and see if you can move the end of the driveshaft up or down and side to side,if you can then you should pull the 4 bolts and remove the rear driveshaft flange and look closer at the nut under the flange.Your 14 should be okay though as they were staking the nut in place better by then.

I personally am not a fan of Amsoil gear oil - I had an outdrive let go after going to Amsoil marine gear lube.
Could have been a coincidence but the marine gear oil looked more like a lighter engine oil than a 80/90 weight gear oil. I didn't test the oil but I would swear that it was a packaging issue.

I only put Redline in my truck rearends - I have seen it survive where many others didn't.

that spider gear issue is very common on jeeps with lsd rear end. I personally know people who that has happened too and Jeep warranties it so if you are still in drivetrain warranty they will install new spider gears and what ever else was damaged.

Skip right to the 8 minute point of this video
before that, they were working on the front differential

They are working on a 2017 Ram 1500 Rear ZF 9.25 differential, same thing as yours
Watching these videos will teach just about everyone a lot

& this is a continuation video

Did anyone notice that the rear differential was actually not a ZF differential, watch minute 21 of the 2nd video
If i am not mistaken, the ZF differential ring gear would have the ring gear Welded , not bolted to the carrier

It's the front that's welded not the rear.
I think someone on this forum mentioned that the OEM of the Mopar LSD is actually Auburn.
