So I have received notice that my truck has a recall needing to be done. It's recall 35d. It's simply a software update. Why on earth do I have to take it into the dealer when the truck is capable of receiving over the air updates?

According to my search "It’s a mandatory dealer‑performed software flash, likely because FCA requires controlled update conditions (battery support, validation, logging) for safety‑critical modules". I guess not every software issue is simple like Windows 11.

I've had the truck just about a month. This is my 3rd recall. I'm racking em up. I don't mind the occasional dealer visit, but I'm starting to feel like an unpaid employee having to go in so often. At least they could do is fill the tank each time it is required to be brought in at a minimum.

Actually, the least they could do would have been to produce a product that doesn’t require recall after recall.

I agree and it can be annoying to keep dragging it in for such..... But at least they are fixing things - Or so we hope.

At least it isn't a record setting (yet) Ford MC vehicle. I think I may have to have the 35D treatment myself. I pulled out of a parking space yesterday and the truck died while easing along. I might have passed 5 or 6 spaces. It was like I punched the button off. I had already checked for loose cables and fuses and pushed half a dozen down after the first "die" a week ago. Started right back up again. I did a search and the #1 probability is ECM/PCM software stability.
The number of connections around the batteries is ridiculous. I can't imagine operating one in the salt belt.

How about completing the C4B ( HSU) recall on my 2018 Ram 2500?
Been waiting over a year on it

I think I've had 5 or 6 recalls on my '17.
Plus a failed alternator, and failed stereo. Chrysler/Dodge/RAM/FCA/Cerebus/Stallantis has really lost their way. I have no idea who's steering the ship, and I doubt they do either.

HCU failure means no traction control/ABS/cruise control for 5 years now. But at least I get a bell that dings every 30 seconds for hours at a time. On the good side of things, I got a good reply from RAMCares, and we're working on a solution.

I’ve been waiting 5 years for the 3rd HCU/ABS unit to be installed. Last time I talked with the service department at my local ram dealer he pretty much said deal with it because he doesn’t know if it is ever going to happen.!? WTF

When I got my 04 5.7 1500 the dealer told me software updates would be FRee as long as I owned the truck. I think they did 1 update in 07. I wonder. . If I drove it in today at 22yrs & over 400,000miles. If they’d update it for free . Hmmmm

If you made it to 400k miles and 22 years the last thing I would do is take it to a dealer. You likely achieved those years and mile by never going to the dealer.

Thanks, my vehicle goes in Wednesday and hopefully I won't require any assistance. Hope I'm not being foolishly optimistic.

Good luck on that. The only thing you'll get is day old coffee. I've gone in on recalls and was turned down for a quick wash.

Well, recall complete. Now more confused as ever as to why this was not done over the air. It was a software update only, they pulled my truck in a parking place, left it running and completely unmonitored. Could have just done that via over the air in my driveway. Took 45 minutes and it's off the list. No technician checked anything. I asked why I had to bring it in, and its so they can put a sticker on the truck to indicate it was done. So 40 miles in fuel roundtrip, 45 minutes in fuel idling, hr in and hr back, plus an hour at the dealership. I don't even want to know what this free update cost me.

Did they open the hood if so they most likely hooked one of their tools to ecm....

They did open the hood at the very end and put a sticker on the frame. No magic, no mechanic involved, no specialized tools or diagnostic equipment...it was like letting windows update do its thing. The sticker was the most complicated aspect of the process.

I have a 2024 Recall/TSB software update pending and it will stay that way. Last time I let dealer update stuff I ended up with 2 other issues which have never been resolved. Dealer said STAR Case initiated but can show me no proof ever initiated and gives me the Okie dokie on it denies all. So I keep my obd port secured and not let them touch it.

They don’t like it but my answer to them is tuff chit.

Because of the interaction involved in successfully flashing certain modules (the instrument cluster in your particular recall).
OTA updates are for modules like the radio, telematics box, security gateway, which can be completed while the vehicle is in use, or sitting in park with the engine off, with no interaction from the vehicle owner.

An instrument cluster flash requires the ignition to be in run, vehicle not being driven, battery maintainer hooked up to keep battery between a certain voltage, and you can’t reasonably expect the average vehicle owner to follow these guidelines when they determine the difference between a successful flash or a bricked module.

Does anyone know how a dealership handles trade ins on these trucks wit outstanding HSU recalls?

My understanding is that they cannot sell vehicles with outstanding safety recalls
