would a 20x12 rim fit on a 285 55 20 tire? and if i get a rim with a more negative offset around -44 and would it be fine on a stock height 14 ram 1500 without any rubbing? or woul i have to go for a 20x10 rim

A 20x12 rim is too wide for a 285/55 tire.

A 285/55 tire will fit a 10" rim but that is the maximum recommended width for that tire. That tire wheel combination is 32.3" tall.

At the very least I'd recommend some adjustable height shocks, such as the Bilsteins, to avoid rubbing.

Your stock 20" wheels have a +19 offset. Going to a -44 means the wheel and tire move out from the stock location by just about 2". With a 285, a 10" wheel and some adjustable shocks up front you won't need to push it out that far unless you want to.

What do you have on the truck now for wheels and tires?

You don't need a lift kit to put on the Bilsteins.

You can level it, you can lift it or you can put on the Bilsteins. Any of those options will work.

What size are the Nittos and your wheels?

Stock shocks may, or may not, be adequate. It depends on how much height you are planning to add, if any.

The 285/55x20's are 32.3" tall. If your Nittos on the stock rims don't exceed the height and width by too much then yer good. But in order to be sure, we gotta start with the specs of what's on the truck now.

No worries about all the questions.

Here's a great thread by brandonjansen that includes a LOT of good info on tire and wheel sizes, fitments, etc...that will help:
