Howdy all. The other day I was on the highway and kept hearing basically a pop or crackling come from my head liner. It was sort of raining so I didn't think much about it. Today I went to another town about 35 miles away to get some lumber. On the way there (I didn't have the AC on or windows open) it sounded like hail hitting the top of the truck at speeds above 55 mph. The sun was out, so it wasn't hail. On the way back it was hot enough to turn the AC on, it still made the sounds like hail hitting just not as much at a time, if that makes sense.

It almost sounds like the glue is failing holding the headliner to the top, but I don't think they glue it.

Just wonder if anybody else has had this issue.

I have an appointment with service on Wednesday to see if they can figure it out.

@Farmer Fran It is weird. I checked my tonneau cover (took it off) thinking it was coming from the bed area, even though I hear it above my head. I know when they take it for a test drive it won't do it.

I had a 89 F150 that had a rattle in the drivers door for the longest time. I brought it to the dealer they took the door apart and found a bolt some one the line dropped in it.

Knew a guy who bought a new impala in the mid sixties, don’t recall exact year. Every corner he heard a clunking noise in the passenger door. Took it back to the dealer. Removed the interior door panel and found a wrench tied on a string with this note taped to it “you found me”!

In all seriousness though. Check the rubber molding that runs the length of the cab from front to back on either side of the roof. Sounds like one of them may be loose and the wind is causing it to flutter.

Question for you, do you have a bug deflector on the hood?

I do have a bug defector on the hood. It is the kind that tapes to the hood itself. I hear this with the windows up and from behind me, it is not the normal flutter you hear in modern vehicles, with windows down.

See if it occurs with the windows rolled down. It could possibly be the ANC system. If it occurs with the windows down, then you can eliminate this theory ;)

Try to find another pair of ears that can move around in the interior while you drive. That might help locate the area.

I have a service appointment Wednesday, so I will have a tech riding around with me. I just hope it does it, as much as it did last week so he can hear it.

Update. I brought it to the dealer today for an oil change and tire rotation along with the snap/ pop noise. On the way there I decided to take the interstate to make sure it was still doing the noise. Well it wasn't, so I told them not to worry about it. If I can figure out how to reproduce it, then I will bring it in and let them try and figure it out.

I've already had that noise, just since I put a bug deflector on, just if you get the right travel speed in the right conditions......
Can be annoying if it crackles and pops on a long drive

I have not heard it in a few weeks now. I haven't been on the road I heard it the most for awhile. I will be needing more maple and walnut pretty soon, so I will be on that road again. If I don't hear it again I will not be surprised.
