Engine coolant light came on today. It's about 80°F outside. Dash says the coolant temp was at 256°. Opened the hood and saw coolant spraying out around where the coolant enters the engine at the thermostat. The reservoir was empty so added plain water. The engine quickly overheats again when driving. Even at idle it heats up to 250° before I turn it off.

It's a 2012 1500 with 39,350 miles. (I know) I'll take it to my local garage guy tomorrow. But anything I should try first?

I can confirm that around 220° I do hear a 2nd fan kick on and the top hose and radiator cap then gets hot. But doesn't cool it even then. Still just goes up and up til I turn it off.

only circulation you arae getting is once the thermosdtat opens up, the boiling water moves but far too slowly to get cooled down, in teh radiator, as it never actually stops and sits in the radiator because your thermostat never cools down enough to close

regardless, 2012, it;s time to redo all of it. New water pump, thermostat, hoses. Fluid flush too. Since that far into it, see if you can fidn a new radiator at a good price.
I would hate to do all of this to replace radiator 3 - 5 years down the road.

I see you only have one post.

again, thanks for coming and welcome

Oh yeah, do NOT run that engine with water only.
Unless you like the idea of buying a new engine.

Thanks. I definitely won't be running it. I'll probably even get it towed to my garage even though it's like a mile away.

I really don't mind making all these replacements. I would do it myself but I live in an apartment at the moment. My mechanic is pretty trustworthy.

This truck has been nearly trouble free except for the water leaking in the rear break light.
I will definitely follow up with my results. And thanks very much for the help.
