CJ maybe there is a not reading thing going around, we have nearly everyone running 5w30 and reporting their temps and pressures since Syn, H395, and RLK took the lead on using heavier oil. I was one of the last hold outs because I bought into that ********* as well. Consider the problems that are going on with ram and other manu's, consider that FCA abandoned thinner oil in the eco diesel because they literally had too many fails. A number that is also happening in the 5.7 in scary numbers, maybe not enough for Ram to abandoned 5w20 in that application because they freaking can't. Because your epa will put them out of business. it is a myth that 5w30 will raise temps, again we have been doing this now for years. Anyhow, I thank you for posting the info, you might also choose to read what we have been posting as far as temps and pressures for a while too. Everyone can make their own choice, but if you think someone went from 212 to 230 degrees by changing from 5w20 to 5w30, I have some silver stocks for sale they are great :)

Hammer is spreading disinformation. I used to think he was just misinformed, but clearly he is just making stuff up at this point.

with respect

I agree Burla, I prefer 5w-30 Mobile 1 myself for newer vehicles & 10w-30 high mileage for the older.
If it was not for the price difference I would be using RedLine oil also.
Running the C+ATF, 75W140 GL-5 Gear Oil & SI-1 Complete Fuel System Cleaner in a 2014 Ram because its a great product.

Respect back at ya.........

Everyone running 5w30, report those temps when you have been on the freeway for while. I will do so as well next time I go 10 miles or better.

When I was on the dealers free oci (5 ea) with what I'm assuming was 20wt oil from the giant tank it was being pumped out of ,
on the interstate on multiple 750 mile trips my oil temp in the summer would be between 208 and 215°f , when I switched to Redline 5W-30wt , my oil temp on the interstate never gets above 195°f in the summer . Even riding around town in the summer the RL 5W-30 wt doesn't get to 208 ....
My oil pressure increased about 2psi cold high idle , but at operating temps at 75mph both run at 54-55 psi .

You are wrong. I did test this, keep in mind I was racing up Georgia Mountains for hours, constantly 6000+ RPM`S over and over up canyons. That's a big difference from y'alls daily drivers, and even a big difference from the drag strip at 14 seconds down the track. The average oil tempature increase was 16 degrees F. It crested over 230 degrees F a hand full of times.

Forgot to mention the daily driver temps with the 5w30 oil, only a 2-3 degrees F increase in engine oil tempature. That dosent sound like much but keep in mind the engine internal components are cooled by oil directly and that oil can be 50-90 degrees Hotter than sump temperatures.

My temps with 5w20 PYB would easily reach 225-230 just driving around in the summer with no load. With Redline 5w30 it struggles to get to 212 just driving around in the summer with no load. Conversely, here are pics of my temps while towing my 4500lb TT over the summer with RL 5w30 in the crankcase. The second picture is towing it up the mountains of NH in October. As soon as I stopped the oil temp quickly came down to 210 or so both times. And the UOA on that oil was the best I've done so far for wear metals.16a12266b89d8eec976a0b4c9277362c.jpg122c70db43a5d7663181978293ff28b8.jpg

You know the one thing I didn't even think about, the ability of ester based fluids to bring down temps. So Corey saying his 5w30 is running COOLER then the 5w20, maybe be due to the fact it is redline. For apples to apples, we would need someone with regular ol group 3 oil to post their temps.

It is just crazy the constant proof what this ester fluid is doing for so many Rams. If you would have told me this 5 years ago I would not have believed it, but seeing is believing.

I’ll post mine tomorrow or next time I drive. I just put in some sweet Valvoline Full Syn Maxlife 5W-30 to run this OCI.

Btw oil consumption is a big problem for GM 5.3L with direct injection and I bet it is largely due to it being 5W-20...

Yeah ya gotta compare apples to apples, got to be same brand/type oil under same conditions with different weights.
Red Line 5w-30 may keep engine cooler than Mobile1 5w-30, I have know idea.
Any volunteers to test..........lol

I think the best way is to post your oil type & wt . along with a photo of the instrument cluster while temps are up and doing about 70mph .
Like hemi395 did above .

Damn Hammerhead, you guys street racing in the mountains or like you say mountain racing.
Sounds like ya got road coarse racing temps & conditions.
How ya get cops & traffic out of the scene...........lol

Maybe an offroad 4x4 race?
Mud would definitely raise some temps.

These are pictures of my 5W-30 RL after about 25 miles of driving pulling 7,500 lbs of trailer and rock and sitting at a stop light .

Keep in mind I have the 6 speed xsmn which never gets above 150° unless pulling serious hills or hauling more than 5k .
