I've ran 20 wt and 30wt in the winter and I struggle getting to 195 , every couple weeks I take a drive up the mountain in the winter & get my oil above 212 degrees , usually above 220 up the mountain ...

Yeah, I'm running 5/30 for the extra viscosity and that's about what my temps are too. So apparently theres no advantage for the 20 wt even in the winter. My only concern is getting the condensation to boil off. I love the days that I can get my temp above 212. Mine tops out around 215/218, there's no real mountains here to run up.

after reading though this and a few others threads on synthetic oils for a 2018 5.7 hemi in cold Pa. east coast area, it would be best to run 5w-30 or a 50/50 mix of 5w-20 & 5w-30 in winter? Would you recommend going with red line oil right from the start. I am still in break in with under 1000 miles but plan on doing an oil change at or before 3000 for the first change. Will also be going with the royal purple filter since it has been so highly recommended. I would like to combat the hemi tic right from the start. My last hemi had it around 125k but was not so hard to control with the right oil.
Sir , I recommend posting your question here

http://www.ramforum.com/showthread.php?t=27664

As you'll likely get more responses...

Hope this helps !

Weight has not much to do with winter rating, 5w20 and 5w30 both have very similar cold start up viscosities, it is when the engine is warm that is when weight matters. I would use 30 weight over 20 weight in 100 out of 100 conditions. Look at the chart, 20 weight is the same, in winter you only concern yourself with the winter rating, the first number in the 5w30, the second number is the weight. If I was to buy a new hemi, every oil change would be 5w30 redline with a RP filter, as long as the formula stayed the same and other ester/pao options didn't exist. 0w30 and 10w30 redline aren't as desirable to the 5w30 imo, but all three are good choices if you can't find 5w30, or you find a sale like right now 10w30.

Yeah, I was just wandering if the 20 wt would warm up faster so you'd have more chance of burning off condensation. Apparently there's not much difference if any at all. It's 68 degrees outside and I just went for a 30 drive and sat in drive thru line for about 10 min and by the time I got home my oil had just got up to 212 degrees.

This is a sick deal, spend over 100 shipped free 10w30 redline, RLK's favorite.

Less the 10 bucks a qrt for Redline 30 weight oil, not buying this is dumb imo unless you have many cases in the garage like many of us do. Think, time tested ester - pao based oil for less then 10 bucks. Go to any auto parts store generic group 3 stuff is 10 bucks a qrt.

See chart above post, 10w30 is still good down to -30F, so no reason this wouldn't be a good choice for most locations usa.

I might grab some 10w30 for the summer but I doubt I'd run that in the winter. Plus RL 5w30 is working so damn well in my Hemi I kind a don't want to mess with it...

I probably wouldn't mess with it after all you've been through [emoji16][emoji16][emoji16]

If you do go with the 10W , just mix it 50/50 with 5W like I do [emoji106][emoji106]

wow that is a gift she may not endure much , but it has more benefits than she will likely ever know [emoji16][emoji16]

I once bought my wife a brand new chainsaw for her B day ....she Loved it because it was an 18" as opposed to the 30" I had her using prior to her gift

So as the title states I thought it would be nice to have an updated synthetic motor oil poll here on Ramforum.

Amsoil XL or Signature Series
Castrol Edge or GTX Magnatec
Mobil 1 or Mobil 1 Advanced
Pennzoil Platinum or Ultra Platinum
Redline
Royal Purple
Schaeffer's
Quaker State Ultimate Durability
Valvoline Synpower
Walmart Supertech

Especially, if OTHER put it in the comments as only 10 choices are allowed.

I also made it so choices are public and more than one is allowed so people can see what others use specifically.

If you are using tapa-talk then load as webpage to vote in the poll!

Thanks for the new thread Mr. Smiley:favorites13:

I'd like to share some independent oil testing with everyone, conducted by a Mechanical Engineer. Most of the oils in the poll have been tested by this guy, 209 oils tested to date. All of you can freely scroll through all 209 oils and see where your oil of choice compare to all the others. This guy also has a questions and answers section where you can ask a qualified pro and get a qualified answer. I have personally enjoyed this site and have learned so much about oil, I think all of you will find this testing very informative. Enjoy:)

For those of you running a 30w oil in your rig when the manufacturer’s recommendation calls for 20w oil this is for you. I proved that the 4th gen Hemi was designed to run 5w20 because of the clearances inside the motor. To prove this I wrote certified letters to the manufacturing plant in Mexico, Corporate office in Michigan and Corporate office in the United Kingdom. They responded in an email and gave me the clearances between the Camshaft and Bearing, and advised 5w20 oil to be used. Those of you that actually build engines you know what I’m talking about. The larger the clearances the thicker the oil can be used and the tighter the clearances the thinner oil Needs to be used. Because, internal engine components are cooled by oil Directly, and cooled by coolant Indirectly; therefore thinner oils cool internal engine components better because it flows better pulling heat form your engines internals. I actually tested this in my 2013 Ram RCSB. I raced frequently in the North Georgia Mountains using 5w20 oil and my oil sump temperature average was 212 degrees F, I switched to 5w30 oil and my sump temperature average was 230+ degrees F. Why? Because thinner oils flow better than thicker oils through internal engine components. Thicker oils drive up bearing and sump temperatures plain and simple. Thinner oils flow, lubricate and cool internals engine components better than thicker oils. Before any of you say that thicker oils protect better you need to understand that as long as you have good Hot PSI oil pressure the spinning crankshaft is creating an incompressible hydrodynamic liquid oil wedge of protection.
With all that being said and the testing I performed in my own Ram isn’t convincing enough I challenge And encourage you to read SECTION 2 – MOTOR OIL VISCOSITY SELECTION in the link provided below.
