I don't remember what track NHRA was at a couple of weeks back, they were hitting 338 mph in the quarter mile top fuel category.

Go Pros on the cars would pixelate, unable to handle the velocity of the scenery. It seemed like lighting a missile and hanging on for dear life. A funny car let go at that race, too. Blew the body clean off just like pre-computer control days.

I think they were here in AZ, at Firebird Raceway.

Is this the best of the Darwin awards or what? If someone knows this guy please spray fish oil on his bear suit, like please.

Anything like that around here doesn't surprise me a bit. That guy is about an hour from me.

Probably some shine or Jack involved.

Actually. NHRA Top Fuel and Funny Cars make their runs in 1000 feet, and have done so since 2008.

meh, we always called em quarter mile.
3/4 of my life. Don't care so much now that I'm old.
Same here. Used to be a big NHRA fan, attending NHRA events including going to the U.S. Nationals down in Indianapolis several times. Also used to hit the local drag strips in different cars and motorcycles that I had back in the day. Don't follow it much anymore.

did not know that 1..

So since the lights are fixed, that means all of the runs even when the nhra left the building is also 1,000 feet. So quarter mile times, really aren't quarter mile times. Makes me wonder if auto manu's use that as their 1/4 mile times. interesting though.

It makes sense, that last 300 ft comes at a cost.

The NHRA shortened the Top Fuel and Funny Car races from a quarter-mile (1,320 feet) to 1,000 feet in 2008, primarily as a safety measure following the fatal crash of Funny Car driver Scott Kalitta and concerns about insufficient shutdown areas at some tracks.

But here is the rub, apparently the car blew at the 1,000 ft mark, so not really sure how this would stop that event from happening again. They are still fun to see.

Battery technology is going to need to be at the point where 1% - 100% can be done in literally 5 minutes for me consider an EV.
That said, I heard that something like that was on the horizon and battery tech is coming up. Other alternatives to gas are coming up as well. Synthetic fuel, hydrogen, etc. There's a number of choices right now, but nothing is making me think, a good long term replacement for my gas truck at this moment.

Tires are their limiting factor, they have the power to exceed 400 mph in a 1,000ft,but not the tire technology to put it to the ground. They can blow the tires off at well in excess of 330 mph,if the clutch guy doesn't get the clutch tune-up right, lol

Hydrogen is something I would consider. Fueling would be similar to a gas/diesel vehicle and the only emission would be water vapor.

Might even be able to retrofit existing ICE engines to run on it...

Ford dinked around with for awhile. The longterm investment is huge, i don't recall anybody still working on it when I was put out to pasture.

Cummins installed a reformer in our old plant, not sure what that's about. I don't recall hearing about using stored electricity to power the electrolyzers.
