Just did this today on a 30 mile round trip to the post office.
Posting for a comparison if anyone's interested.

My truck & test specs.

14 Ram 1500 4x4 5.7L 6 speed xsmn 3.55 differentials , total stock engine with an occ.

OAT = 72° f
Truck miles 35,705
Miles on oil 400 ish
Oil = 3ea RL 0W -40 & 4ea RL 5W-30

First start of the day cold start high idle aprox 1400 rpm peak

Oil pressure = 58 psig

Normal idle about one minute later aprox 700 steady rpm

Oil pressure = 54 psig (cold oil)

Now with oil.temps between 201 & 206°f

55mph =53 psig
65mph =55 psig
75mph =56 psig

Idle in park W/oil temp @203°f
= 43 psig

Ok just spent several hours going over the 540 Rat blog and his tech Q&A section lots of oil info about 183 oils and their ability to lubrecate , raven picked his QSUD from this list it shows to be one of the best if you buy into this guys testing methods, he lists his credentials as being top notch so maybe his findings are worth looking at. My amsoil 5-20 was not in his test so that sucked, he gives very good data why its best to run as thin a oil as still provides good oil pressure, i wish he would weigh on pn using 5-30 in a ram hemi but i never found that Q asked

Just got done with a 900+ mile trip, and snapped some pics along the way. This is with the factory fill. Sorry if some are blurry!

Seems about right to me , in fact if my oil ever got that hot I'd say my temps would be comparable .

The 230* was up a 6% grade for 3 miles in 6th gear, I shifted at the top of the hill and it never dropped from 80 MPH, averaged 20.7 MPG, over the whole 900 miles which is pretty good for stock oil, and all the hills I had to climb at 80!

That's fantastic mpg's , I'll try to remember to take a pic tomorrow on what my mpg are on my current tank .
I usually avg 20 +- .5 for my daily driving ( evic #s ) even with my current oil of a 40wt & 30 wt mixture. I've gotten the same mpg's from the factory fills of bulk oil , 20wt PYB , RL 5W - 30 and currently using my cocktail of 40 & 30 weight RL oil .

☆☆☆☆☆EDIT ☆☆☆☆EDIT☆☆☆☆☆

I have never reset this page since my truck was new with 21 miles on it , 12 of which wer mine on a test drive .
This is through all the long winter idling warm ups and winter blend fuels .

This is my current tank of gas , these #s are typical for me (Evic #s wise ) hand calculated is -.8 to -1.1 mpgs .
I drive like a Grandpaw !

When is a good time to change the factory fill? I'm at 3614.8 now. I have another upcoming 900+ miler this Saturday, is it worth it to do it now?

Do it now !

Not meaning to scare ya , but I personally would do it prior to your next trip , if you have the time .
Then I'd be pouring in my own oil.

If you have the free oil change deal just don't let them pump in oil from a hose from a bulk tank !
If they are pouring in oil make sure you WATCH them so you will know what your running .
If they typically pump it in from a bulk tank , just bring your own oil & have them pour that in .
Good luck !

On the mpg's the gagues are not spot on mine usually comes in 1 mpg under what it says if you do your own math, First oil change since its conventional oil i would say anytime your ready , i would want to get all that new motor break in contamanants out and get clean freash oil and filter on. If your staying with a 5-20 amsoil SS is great oil but you might want to look at Quaker state ultimate durability on the list of 183 oils tested on the 540 rat blog it was #1 above all others tested worth checking out his data.

The 20.7 was hand calculated. Truck was close at 21.4, but I figured it would tell me a little better than it was actually getting!

I have Amsoil SS 5W-30 that I was going to run. It's already up in the 90's here and I've always thought 20wt oil for V8's was a little light. I will run it and get a UOA around 2500 miles to see how it's doing. This thread has led me down a good path, and I really enjoy reading all the info you guys post, I know each person/engine has what they like, and now I get to find out what my engine likes! Let the fun begin!

On another note, has anyone used either the Amsoil or Blackstone pump to do the oil sample?

Hey guys found this side by side high end oil filter video worth watching has the fram ultra, wix xp royal purple and some others, easy to see if you want better flow the wix and ultra way better with many more oil flow holes, confirms royal P and amsoil filters are made by the same company, they are identical, also says all have close to same micron filtering. Anyway since this covers most of what the guys here use figured you might be interested.

Wow , I watched the video and I certinly would not say "I'll never use a RP filter again "

It's important to point out these filters wer NOT for our 5.7L Hemi engines.

Watch the video yourself , make your own determination.

For me , I'm confident the RP is just fine for our trucks !

I recently have been a RP10-48 Filter user .
The RP 10-48 Filters ( 2ea) I've installed have had a coil spring verses the stamped steel . The stamped steel is fine ;however, I do prefer the coil.

After watching the video , I will likely be giving the WIX filter a try next ( as recommended by "RodRam " in the past ) and RodRam just so happens to be the OP of this video .

Looks to me all of these filters are great filters , but I'll be trying out the WIX next .

It's not like I'm gonna walk to the autoparts store to change my RP10-48 LOL , I'll be running my current fill & filter till November.

Changed from QSUD 5w20 to QSUD 5w30 today, both grades used Fram XG10060.
Yesterday ascended the 6% grapevine up hill grade ~7 miles of up hill climb
OAT: 90F at top of hill, 98F at base of grade
50 mph on cruise control
Oil temp: 226F at top of grade
Tow load: 500# 4x6 utility trailer, made from 56, F100, ~500#

Today with 5w30
Identical conditions to yesterday
But, Oil temp: 233F at top of grade

Increase of 7F, probably because slightly reduced oil flow rate with 5w30 compared to 5w20.
There is still oxidation with synthetic, the but less than conventional.
Also, 5w30 will shear down at a faster rate than 5w20.

Raven I did notice a temp increase with 30wt oil. Oil got up to 217* at one point the other day and it was only 75 out. Last summer running 20wt PYB on a 650 mile trip in 90* heat I hit 219* oil temp. Interesting...

But if you buy into the 540rat info u posted to us the other day the Qsud 5-30 can handle higher heat way better than the qsud 5-20 so you should be good. Now tell us how is it different from the 20 feel, noise, smoothness. OP
