sounds like one of the latches on either side is sticking. I'd check there. Not sure on the 15 but my 12 has an inspection panel on the tailgate too.

Does it have a spray in bed liner?

Good question. If yes, maybe it was sprayed a little too thick or not properly masked off.

I had the same issue on my 09, but it would only happen after opening it in severe cold temps. Every time it happened, I took the panel off, lubed the back side of the handle where the linkage pivots & lubed the latches. Could never remember what worked best--wd40, silicone spray, or white lithium grease.

I had my gate apart for something unrelated and saw the whole mechanism. The latching/unlatching is super basic with just the handle and a couple metal rods running to the latches (I'm sure someone will F this up with something electronic in the near future :))

Point being, pull the top panel off the inside of the gate at check/lube/tighten everything up. Something is either loose and allowing the latches to give way or something needs some lube and isn't allowing the latches to fully engage.

It's a 2015, quite frankly, don't bother screwing with it and make it warranty's problem. Not usually one to bring my stuff to a dealer for anything but when it's that new and the tailgate's randomly falling open, that sounds like a them problem to me. :buffer:

Yea after mine was rhino lined I really had to slam mine shut or else it would fall down after opening it.

If you want to do yourself. Unscrew the 8 screws on the inside of the tailgate. Put lube on the latch and test to make sure it works. The latch inside gets wet and can cause this issue. I have needed to lube mine up about once per year.

I’d recommend bringing it to a local certified FCA dealer. Let me know if you need assistance. – Kevin T, Social Connect Team

Yes it does have a factory spray in bedliner. I have owned the truck for over 1 year now, and it just started doing this last month so I dont believe it has to do with the bedliner. My truck has been to the dealer 5+ times for issues already, and I am sure they will just tell them they couldnt recreate the problem. Rather fix it myself lol. I will regrease and tighten everything

Tailgate just randomly opens! And it's Loud!

Scares the **** out of me! I noticed it's only when I first get in the truck and start it! I'll make it 100 yards and Boom!!! It so loud! One time I thought I was getting rear ended!! The first couple times I just figured it was not latched properly or my kids were pulling on it! It's now happend like 10 times since June. And this is on a truck where the tailgates almost never used! I'm always towing a trailer with almost no clearance so it stays closed. I'm now positive I'm not crazy! Somethings going on with this tailgate! Finding this thread assured me! Same year truck! What's the fix? Regardless I'm taking it to the dealer, but I'm a marine mechanic and I know how it is to catch something like this in the act! It's rare but consistent I guess. I'm good
Enough at what I do to know for sure its not a lubrication issue. I'm certain it somehow opens the tailgate hatch when you unlock the truck, then when your driving it just drops like a damn ton of bricks, this model is equipped with remote locking tailgate. It will wake your ass up... I can tell you that much! It happens to my wife, so hear I am, making sure this won't happen again, she almost had a "Heart Attack"!

I never took it to the dealer. And yes it ONLY happens when I start traveling within the first 100 yards... happens all the time. I cant even tow my boat becauss if it decides to drop thats the end of that tailgate. I tried taking it apart and cleaning/wd40 didnt do anything. It is something with our door locks the solenoid locking on the tailgate makes it drop I believe. I need to get it to the dealer but I doubt they will duplicate the problem...
Please post if you figure it out its ridiculous I have had to stop and pick up tools off the road 2x now

Get a dash cam and aim it out the back glass to catch it in action. Also look up ram cares on this forum and shot them a message. Hope yall get it replaced under warranty.

Just the electrician in me, but I would disconnect the door lock on the tailgate and see if appears to resolve the problem? If it does, then at least you can take it to the dealership and give them that bit of information as well?

Just spitballin ...

You forgot my truck has been to the dealer 5x for other issues... and only 2 of those times did they succesfully "recreate the problem" so yeah. Having this mmay problems with a truck is ridiculous lol how can you not keep a tailgate closed. And I am not the only one do a google search. Seen other similiar posts with no fix. I have disconnected the tailgate from the lock when I took the cover off to clean and lubricate the mechanisms.

I've noticed lately that the handle doesn't stay latched on mine. It hasn't opened yet, but the handle opens while I'm driving.

These are pretty basic when you look at it. It's got to be the latch that isn't going into the lock position 100%.

I have heard this happening before but I don't recall ever hearing a fix for this.

You could install a bed shock so your tailgate doesn't flop down.

I am not sure why these trucks don't come with them stock... or why people don't purchase this $30 MUST HAVE MOD.

It's a must of you have kids. That tailgate can fall on the top of your kids head if another kid is opening it.

All the trucks I've owned never did this.. So really can't be much help.

But if you take it in.. the dealer may or may not be able to 'recreate' the issue, but tell them you can't be the first one to report the problem and have them look it up.

I can see what the dealer does this "can't create" the issue - saves the time and money, but something like this, can be only 2 things. Latch or rods..

And left it disconnected? Just curious if it made any difference at all?

I had this happen a couple of times, but during extreme cold periods. At one point the latch was so frozen, the tailgate wouldn't even latch closed, I had to bring the tailgate in the house to thaw. Cleaned it up with a penetrating lubricant to displace the moisture and haven't had an issue since...
