2018 Dodge 3500 Cummins. When accelerating it starts in 1st gear then hops into 4th gear but won't go anymore than that. The ATF is to its proper level and still it's red colour. Also when shifting into reverse or drive it jumps a little. Not sure what's up with the truck, as I'm young and new to this stuff. I used my blue driver and below is what I got for issues relating to the trans. Any solutions y'all got would be awesome. 1000005887.png1000005888.png

What is the mileage and history?

Are you the original owner or how long have you owned it?

Has the transmission ever been serviced?

180434km. Truck has just been used to drive, and some stock trailer hauling. Never had problems with anything with it. One owner. I'm not sure as of now if it has been serviced, but I'd imagine so as it always is taken for its services when due.

That sounds like you're not too sure about previous fluid & filter changes.

If it has a 68RFE transmission, there are many members who are very experienced with this transmission, I wouldn't be one of them.

Unless I had the paperwork to confirm the work, I would consider it incomplete and start with a fluid & filter change.

Someone with more experience with this transmission may have other ideas.

First/Fourth gear is limp mode.... the tranny has detected problems and is protecting itself from further damage by sticking to those two gears. The problem isn't first/fourth gear.... that's the symptom and by design. Get it to a shop.

Is the truck stock, or has it been deleted/tuned. Before limp mode, did you feel slipping when the truck shifted into 5th, 6th gear?. Might want to drop the pan and look for metal or excessive clutch material on the magnet (gray goop covering the magnet), if you are unsure of the service history

Went thru this with my 2017. 66RFE. Started with OD switch error then starting shifting harder in 4th then eventually got to the 1st and 4th only like you. For a while I could baby it and take it easy and it would shift into all gears, but giving it any extra acceleration, especially at the wrong time, would cause it to go higher RPM then shift hard into 4th and was back to 1st and 4th. Turning it off and on would reset it and the I'd go through the whole thing again. Replaced solenoid, didn't do anything; was told to replace valve body (probably should've done both at the same time); based on costs, I decided to just order a whole new remaned 66RFE. Got it replaced and truck is singing beautifully again.

Before I threw the kitchen sink at it, I'd diagnose the failure first. It's not impossible that it's as simple as a bad valve body. That would be a lot cheaper than throwing a new 68RFE at it.

I would also want to know if it's been messed with (as Hudson said). If the truck has been tuned/deleted and the trans is having issues I'd then probably lean towards a replacement. And if you're going that route, I wouldn't put a stock 68RFE back in it.
