True Duel exhaust...Why do few do it here?

Curious...I have a 14 Limited and installed long tubes, xpipe, kept factory cats for emissions and help computer from going haywire and smelling gas. I then kept it duals all the way through a pair of magnafllow 14s (I think it’s been a while. Maybe 18s) and duals out the back. Truck sounds awesome! Nice deep tone but not super loud. Why does everyone seem to keep the Y pipe?

Cost was a big factor for me, 150-200 bucks for a muffler swap vs 6-700 for a true dual setup. Keeping warranty was also a concern.

I just bought the Magnaflow 18" muffler for $114 and it gives me the sound I want, no need to change out the y-pipe or add the additional cost.

A Y pipe isn’t “true” dual exhaust. That would be eliminating the Y pipe altogether. That’s what I did and enjoys the sound.

Solo performance has a dual kit and while it sounds awesome I remember reading on various forums that stock trucks lost low end torque (via seat of the pants dyno runs).

Plus I figured the money I could save between muffler swap to that kit would be better used in Pedal Commander or other mods.

You need an X-pipe for improved scavenging... and the low end torque thing from a smaller / more restrictive exhaust has shown to be complete BS.

I know why you need an X (or H) pipe, depending on your setup/preferences.
I was simply pointing out that the exhaust that the OP is running is not technically a “true” dual exhaust.

With the torque thing, I wasn’t talking about small restrictive exhausts. I was assuming both could flow the same cfm. There was a really good video a while back showing the dyno numbers comparing several exhaust setups(one was true duals, one was single). I’ll see if I can find the video again.
While none of the different setups significantly changed the total torque and HP numbers, they did change at what RPM those HP/TQ numbers were reached.
Single moved power down in the RPM range, and dual raised it up.
Again, I’ll have to see if I can find that video again.

Top tuners say if you go 3-inch dual like Kooks cat back you lose tq & hp in the low to mid powerband regardless of x or h pipe
You need 600 HP @ the wheels or more for this size exhaust.

The back half of mine was already dual. All I did was eliminate the silly squish (y pipe) added an X pipe, dual in dual out muffler - true duals. Huge difference. More responsive. I've had H and X pipes on several different trucks -the X pipe is hands down better for scavenging. In my own personal experience. No dyno proof or anything like that.

Well, I have yet to find someone to convince me that my setup is sub-par. I run ARH LT Headers (1 3/4) with 3" Y, and Magnaflow Cat-back exhaust system which is 3" all the way to a single exit. If someone showed me significant HP/Torque, I would probably do it. If someone said because it looks/sounds better... move along, there's nothing to see here.

for true dual you want the x or h pipe as close as possible to the headers, putting it where the muffler is is too far away imo.

true dual 3" is too much pipe also for a stock engine with bolts on

Guess I’m going to show my “old-school-ness” here. Growing up, and when I first got into trucks, true dual exhaust did NOT have any kind of cross over. It was just one pipe on each side, running from the engine to the back(mufflers were optional).

i have a 3" QTP cutout right after Y pipe. it sounds awesome @WOT but relatively quiet at idle. i think afe makes an affordable Y pipe. i was happy w 79 dollar cutout

Got any sound clips? I am really tempted to put a QTP cutout behind my ARH Y pipe and before my Magnaflow cat-back. Got a feel for performance gains, even ballpark numbers?

That is exactly how mine is setup. QTP right after the y then my magnaflow. Truck definitely loses low end tq with it open. I couldn’t get the actual cut out to seal completely when shut causing a small exhaust leak. I got fed up and put the block off plate on it. If I ever want to run open exhaust I’ll just unbolt the plate.

Thanks man. Yeah, I live for low-end, which is why my next mod is a 2800 stall.
