You can purchase an RA3 VP3 NA non nav radio on eBay for $300 to $350 pretty easily or the RA4 VP4 NA factory Nav radio for around $350 to $400. It's extremely simple to replace and there is NO special programming required. The radio the dealer installs is almost guaranteed to be refurbished so really not much difference. Any one will work from a 13 to 17 Jeep Grand Cherokee or Ram Pickup. Make sure it's either a VP3 NA or 4P4 NA depending on whether or not you want Nav. NA stands for North America. If the radio has CA for the last two letters it's a Canadian radio and will not have some of the features you currently have. You will need the 4 digit radio unlock code which you can easily get on line for $10 to $15 and that's it.First I get

Dealer wants $1k to put in new head unit. Is there any workaround? Will updating help like first screen suggests? This is a 2014 with 100k miles.
What is it that you are trying to update
Is it a radio software update or a Navigation item
radio software update :

The dealer wasn’t “no help” they just told you what you didn’t want to hear. You can’t repair your current radio, it’s bricked and needs to be replaced. They don’t install units off eBay so they gave you market price on installing a new radio and you didn’t like it. But that’s not “no help”.I have no idea it is just a message that pops up on start up before changing to 2nd message saying there's a problem with head unit. Dealer was no help just wanted to change out unit for $1k which is a little pricey for me right now but he neversaw 1st message it doesn't stay up long.
It's not bricked yet...The dealer wasn’t “no help” they just told you what you didn’t want to hear. You can’t repair your current radio, it’s bricked and needs to be replaced. My experience is that if it’s in the eternal boot up loop (which is what it sounds like) it’s basically done for. It's not bricked yet...

That's great. A word of caution, since it is working again I would caution against any firmware updates. As @IRSmart mentioned, often times these radios can become bricked. Applying a firmware update to a failing radio can sometimes accelerate this process...Guess we kicked the can down the road as today everything worked.

If the radio is not on the latest firmware you should try to update it to the latest firmware version. These radios keep an image of the previous firmware and have a hardware watchdog that will boot to the previous firmware image if the current firmware image is corrupt. Basically the radio is running off the backup copy of the previous firmware. If something happens to that backup copy, the radio will be toast. By applying the latest firmware, the radio will then have two good copies of the firmware.
