I have a 2012 Crew Cab with the Alipne upgrade and sub.

Any possible upgrade using the stock sub box?

Don't think there much you can do with the stock enclosure. Not much depth and the most you can get in there is a 8" sub if I recall correctly.

Well I dug into it last night, and what is in there is a 8" dual voice coil sub. The option on the window sticker might say Alpine, but the back of the speaker has a Chrysler emblem on it, and says made in China.

Anyway, I think one could make a decent upgrade to the sound by either using a separate amp for just the sub (supposed to be 509watts for the whole system with the Alpine option) but to me the sub fades alot.

I'm not trying to shake windows, just would be happy if the bass didn't drop off so much when you turn up some decent rock music.

No spec's on it at all. Not sure how to measure impedance with a meter or anything (I'm a machinist, not an electrical engineer lol)

I would assume that it is 4ohm on each coil, as they ran wire all the way from the dash, thru two connections (2-wires each) into the box all the way up to the speaker itself. If they were running bridged / mono, etc... they would only run one pair of wires.

A lot of newer stock systems run 1ohm subs too, for space/efficiency reasons. I had a 6.5", 1 ohm sub in my car.
I think the biggest drawback would be the space contraint, providing you could give a new sub aftermarket power.
Have you considered something like this?http://www.ddaudio.com/products/mobile-audio/woofers/sw65.aspx
I'd rather have a really high powered 6.5" in an appropriate enclosure, than an adequate 8" in an enclosure barely big enough to meet minimum requirements. (plus, DD makes an awesome product!)

EDIT- just watched a vid with 2 of these bad boys; impressive! https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=335513849870752

I have been thinking about this as well. May end up going to the local custom shop and having a box built.

A single Kicker solobaric L7 would do wonders in the small space.

while the L7 'will' work in the small sealed, I'd prefer to see them in a larger ported box. Now the CVX or Solo Classic would be perfect.

I bought an 8" Memphis Audio sub and tried putting that in the box using the stock amp...no good so I bought a small Pioneer amp to run it and it hit pretty good but the box is junk and you could hear the air escaping. So i ordered a custom box (really 2 boxes one for passenger side and one for drivers side) I only used the passenger side and it takes 10" subs so I took back the 8 and got a 10. Also to make room for the box I had to remove the cover/door under the seat. It sounds way better than stock, now i just have to sell the drivers side box to recoup some of that money. All said and done it cost about $500.
PS the amp fits behind the box on the floor nicely.
Oh and I still use the stock head unit, I used a line out convertor on the speaker wires that ran to the original sub.
