It happens when the top washer is not installed in the proper sequence. The Bilstein 5100 shaft is smaller diameter than the oems so they include a washer that goes under the top mount. Many shops and people see that washer and assume it goes on top of the upper mount under the nut. By not placing it underneath, that shaft can eventually work it’s way thru and cause noises or even failure.

Here’s a thread

I have this issue and mechanic swears the bilsteins were installed correctly with washer below mount. Having the mounts replaced as we speak. Does this make sense?

only thing I can think out was the nut was not tight if the washer was installed correctly. It takes movement to wear the top plate , no movement no wear. Nut tight no movement is my thought .

Did you torque the top nut to the proper torque? If not it can wiggle and that’ll slowly wear the metal down allowing movement and that will just keep wearing until it’s destroyed.

Yupp , can't remember what the torque spec is off top my head ... but always find a list and follow it ... I actually definitively remember that one because it was such a P.I.T.A!! I had to find something to back up the Alan key ... and something to back up that first something, because still wasn't enough leverage LOL

Adding to this old thread. I had the same issue and blew through 6 mounts (3 pairs). First were the KYBs, second 2 pairs were Monroe. Every time the washer was installed in the correct order, torque to spec, and 4-8 months later the squeak is back. It's like the Bilstein threads are chewing through the mount. Now both Bilstein threads are completely worn off on one side and now I have to trash them.

Bilsteins have got to be the most popular aftermarket shock in existence for these trucks and nobody else is having this problem.. they were the OEM lift option in Mopar lifts too.

Nobody likes to admit they were doing something incorrectly but what other possibility exists here?
