I have YET to see one in my area... And you'd think working in WV, I'd see them all the time. Lol!

Tall orange cone

that's what I thought it was. I've just never seen or heard of people doing this. so you put it in the middle of your truck bed? or on the bumper? and since OP asks "why?", I assume it servers no purpose and/or signifies nothing useful? Now I'm going to be looking around for it when I drive.

Keep in mind a couple things. The construction industry has, the last couple years, become very safety conscious. Whether a laborer, supplier, sales, delivery driver, etc, etc, to have a higher recordable rate will keep you from bidding on jobs, winning jobs and in my case as a sales rep keep me from even getting in a jobsites.

Part of this safety culture the last 12-18 months is for all personnel whom drive a company vehicle are required to place at least two comes at the corners of their vehicles. Parked on the right shoulder of road you have a cone at the front left and rear left of vehicles. This does several things when you put cones out. Let's other have another visual aid that there are people/workers near by in the streets, so drive carefully. The cones are als o there to make you do a "360*" walk around. They want you to have to completely walk around your vehicle to pick up the cones and at the same time look for any people, equipment or obstructions that may now be near your truck so you know they are ther and not hit as you pull out.

I have two cones in my work truck.

makes more sense than just random hauling around of purposeless cones.

So the cone was in the bed of his truck? I don't get why this would annoy anyone? I don't really care what people carry around in the bed of their truck as long as it doesn't come flying out at me when I'm following them on the road.

Might be a good idea to carry a few cones to put around your truck wherever you park! Just for the hell of it!

I carry two and since I take my trucks to constructions sites, I place at least one out there everytime I park.

The driver has old timer's disease and that is to remind him that he doesn't have his fifth wheel trailer hooked up?

Ive seen it out here in CA. I was going to keep one in my truck, just because... But once I started seeing brotrucks everywhere with traffic cones, I decided against it.

It is definitely a trend of some sort because Ive even seen instagram photos zoomed in on it (showing off).. Who knows? My guess is that it came up in some new hip hop song or Florida Georgia Line mentioned it along with their Nitto Terra Grapplers.

And then you have these idiots with their jacked up 2wd pavement princess... With a giant sticker "sorry about your neck", insinuating that you were staring so hard it hurt your neck ... These guys are unapproachable because as soon as you tell them the truth about how you really feel... You become a "hater"... There's decals for that too.....
