$5k was Canadian. it actually may have been less then that when i was comparing but i know it wasn't more then $5k difference at the time so i went with that. base models have a bigger gap but once you start adding options the price starts to even out
[edit] just played with the build tool again and a 2500 SLT CC 8ft bed with 4X4 and about half the options is coming out at $67,880. 3500 SLT with almost the same options except a few not available on the 2500 like the Aisin transmission and dual rear wheels is showing $69,060. for $1180 you get far more truck and a much higher resale value so it really wouldn't make sense to buy a 2500 just to save $1180
I will take the ride quality of a 2500 over a 3500 anyway unless I need a drw. If they offer the Aisin transmission in the 2500 that would make it even better.
Towing and payload are 2 completely different things. The towing capacity between the 2500 and 3500 are almost identical untill you move up to the DRW same engine transmission ect. The way you get 30,000lbs towing is the single cab DRW 2wd with the HO 6.7 with the asian, the 3500 with out the asian (and SRW) has a almost identical towing capacity. There is only 10hp and 50tq difference between the two.
I also have to add gear ratio makes a huge difference. According to Rams web page the 6.4l 2500 can tow 50lbs less than the 3500 DRW with the 6.4 same axle. The 2500 only has the 3.42 rear axle. The 6.7 2500 3.42 is 300lbs less than the 3500 with the same ratio.. Witch mad as well be identical.
well, look at the 2012 vs 2013.. same axles, drive train, frame etc.. a 20 hp more (same torque) with auto tranny and 50 ft lbs more torque with manual transmission, yet using 3.42 gears (all that is available on the 2013) you can almost tow 8000 lbs more with the 2013 vs 2012.. USING that, I pretty much don't agree with Ram on ANY of their tow ratings, since there's NO WAY going from 350 hp to 370 hp will increase your max towing from 9600 lbs to over 17,000...
engine has very little to do with towing. brakes, suspension, axles, and frame are the biggest factors. on flat ground you can pull a heavy load with dam near anything but being able to stop that load is the challenge
What was changed from 12-13 to make such a difference?
If I'm not mistaken they re did the frames in 13 suspension, and as a pure guess the brakes were probably upgraded. I bet loveracing knows.
As far as I know everything is the same from 12 to 13 for the 2500's. The 3500's got the upgraded frame and front disconnect in 2013 with the 2500's getting that upgrade the next year along with the coil spring rear suspension and the 3 link front vs the 5 link of old.
i just read 3 reviews of the updated 2013 and they all spoke about the new beefed up frames, and upgraded axles and a redesigned cooling system.

There is only a 2000 pound difference between the two. I don't know what the change was but the GVWR went up to 10000 pounds, that would explain the increased towing capacity.
I see the 2000lbs difference in the max towing but the 2012 got 4.10 with the 6.7. The 2013 only has the 3.42 and with the 3.42 on the 12 the max towing is only 10,000 and the 3.42 on the 13 is almost 18,000. It just has me curious
Still no explanations for difference in 14 vs 15 tow capacity though? It might just be a typo but im pretty sure ram uses the newest standards to rate towing which should mean they have the most legitimate ratings on the market
