Good day all I have a quick question about welders, is a 170
Amp mig/flux wire welder usable to do body work?

You can safely weld .001" per amp. That is the typical thinking. So you can safely weld .17". If you're talking about sheet metal you're good. For frame welding I would use a bigger welder.

I would personally use a Miller Maxstar 150 (TIG), it's a little crackerbox, I own one and weld in the living room of my apartment. My neighbors love me. The manual will tell it can only weld up to 3/16, but if you know what your doing and a little practice you can weld 1/4-5/16, it runs on 115 or 230 @ 150amps. If your going after cost and don't want to spend $1500 on a brand name, I'd go with the Thermal Arc 95S, it only gives you a 95 amp output but will handle any bodywork you can throw at it and for under $500 you can't beat it.
