Whats in the differancial?

I figured I would ask this question here since I have not found the info on the forum. Forgive me if it's here and I didn't look hard enough.

If a person(me) came across a rear diff that was said to be out of a 12 Ram, but the truck was no longer on site. How would you be able to figure out what gears it has and if it has a limited slip? It was said to have been in a Laraime.

If there are no tags on it, pop the cover and look?

do you have the vin? you can use the vin on rams website, it will tell you everything it came with

Gear ratio is easy mark the drive shaft yoke and housing then mark the axle hub and housing. Count the number of turns it takes to rotate the axle one revolution. then measure the distance from the mark on the housing to the mark on the yoke, then measure the circumference of the yoke at the mark and divide the distance by the circumference. For instance if it took 3 turns and 2" and the circumference was 6" you would a gear ratio of 1:3.3. Knowing the VIN of the vehicle it came out of would be easier but this will get you pretty close.
