Which engine?

Looking to order a 2022 Ram Laramie and I come across engine selection I can choose from 5.7 V8 hemi VVT or the VVTe. The only difference I see is that 1 of them gets 1 more MPG. Whats the big deal they both have the same horse power and both are the same option price.

The eTorque is a mild hybrid system that provides more torque when needed and better fuel economy. The traditional alternator is replaced by a generator system. The battery is not serviceable and uses the generator and regenerative braking to charge. I recommend the eTorque, personally.

I’d get the regular Hemi

eTorque gives you a brief 49 lb-ft torque off-idle. Also get a $1k generator and $2k battery.

Plus you lose 70-80 lbs of payload

Not worth +1 mpg. Hard Pass

Hard to justify the benefit of etorque vs. costs if planning on keeping the vehicle for many years. If plan is 3-8 years, I could go with either option. Over 8 yrs., I personally would opt for the non-etorque option. Supposedly, they are warrantied for 8yr/80k miles.

Thanks for your reply. You kind of lost me there, how does cost effect anything it the engines are the same cost option. If the battery is behind the rear seat is that going to cut into my storage room under the back seat?

There's a little benefit to etorque, mainly smoothness or if doing a lot of in stop and go driving you may save gas using stop/start.

It isn't the initial cost, it would be the cost if keeping the truck long term, after 8 years or 80k mile the generator and battery are no longer covered by warranty. Hopefully that clears up what I was referring to. For some people the 80,000 mile comes up quick.

I really don't know if it is any storage space that you would normally use or not, I haven't seen one but I have read it sits behind the back seat, not under it. I do stuff some stuff up behind the seat on my non-etorque but don't know if everyone does.
If you can go see one it person, it would be best.

When the e-torque came out I was excited about possible better fuel mileage with a V-8 but the #'s are a disappointment, also the batteries are a 48 volt set and Li-ion and are no good for a truck sitting in -40 temps ... so they are a no go for where we live.

My neighbor bought a 2021 etorque and had lots of issues. Apparently Chrysler had a lot of problems with it as he had to weight 5 weeks for etorque parts. They gave him a loaner but the mechanic said they had several trucks waiting parts. He got it back and sees no real benefit in terms of mpg

It's just the eTorque battery that behind the seat, the regular +12V battery is under the hood and is used for the initial starting of the engine and powering the accessories

If you do us lot of city driving,stop and go, you might benefit from the etorque, but if you’re inv rural suburban setting, I would pass.

There are supposed features you get with the etorque which are not as obvious as the stop/start. Such as smoothing out shifts. There are videos out there that explain the system very well. I would suggest you search for those to learn more about the etorque system. There are a lot of knowledgeable people here, but misinformation abounds in forums. Here is just one of those...

If I had ordered my truck, I would have gotten it without etorque. Since it has everything else I wanted, I was willing to accept it with etorque. As long as there are no problems with the system, I'm fine having it. But if anything goes wrong with it my truck is pretty much useless. And if a new part is needed, it's likely the truck will sit for an extended period, with all the parts shortages going on now.

I have a 2020 eTorque and love it. No issues. Cold weather does not seem to make any difference. Gas mileage is quite good for a heavy vehicle at 23+ when driving reasonable. No regrets.

how much cold weather and how cold, interested in how the Li-ion batteries are holding up.

I would get the reg. 5.7, the etorque has its issues, and your trade-in
value may be less, many would not want one. In the north, very few
are sold.

Not only that, but this "extra" torque is only applied for the first 1/2 rotation of the wheels, then it's gone.

Oh ok, I view not serviceable as you can't get it, replace it, anything. I think you mean maintenance free as it doesn't require any maintenance, well until it is dead and then you service it by replacing it.

Even the 12v battery is not serviceable as they are maint. free batteries and the AGM batteries are sealed also.

But I get what you mean, sort of like a sealed front wheel bearing is not serviceable - the old unit.

Just the difference in terms between us I deal with stuff that is not serviceable, in as you can't buy it to replace it.
