Hello Fellas!
Been having this issue since the winter now. When I start the truck in the morning, so cold start, the engine whines at idle, and revving and acceleration, for the first 10-15 minutes of commute. I removed the drive belt and disconnected the alternator and the whine still happens. So I'm guessing engine issue. The truck has 80k kilometers or 50k miles. I use conventional 5w20 oil, should I switch to synthetic? Any idea what the issue might be?

I don’t think it’s an engine issue if you remove the belt and it still happens, unless there’s an aftermarket air intake not put on correctly which is allowing air to come in not through the intake but through somewhere else, but this doesn’t explain why it doesn’t happen 10-15 minutes after starting. Check your transmission, when was your last fluid change? 6 or 8 speed?

I have a 2014 5.7 and doesn't do that. By whining, can you be more specific? You said it last for 10-15 mins?

It sounds exactly like a power steering pump low on fluid, but my truck has electric power steering

I bet it’s your a/c compressor.

try this, hit the a/c button to cycle the compressor off and see it the sounds goes away.

I didn’t have this problem until after my compressor and tensioner pulley was replaced. Now, if I start the truck and the compressor is on, I hear a whine that sounds like an old power steering pump whining. If I hit the a/c button the sound goes away as soon as I hear the clutch disengage. After about 15 seconds I can hit the button and I don’t hear the sound.

It’s annoying but I’m not taking the truck back in until I have too....

It is normal, I have had two Rams, and they have both done it. I have went to the dealership, and complained about it. So they showed me multiple new trucks on the lot that did it, and stated it is a normal functioning sound that occurs when the trucks are cold.

Do you think by using synthetic oil, it would stop?

Theres a whine our trucks can make on cold start in freezing temperatures thats considered normal... But not if it doesnt go right away. If yours makes it driving 10 minutes and also makes it at idle with no belt, Id say its the oil pump. Pretty sure theres a TSB...

Belts, pulleys, pumps, bearings, gears, and my kids can all make "whining sounds".

It's 2020, pull your phone out of your pocket and let's *hear it to make a better diagnosis.

Mine has whined since 2012 too, but it sounds like an air whistle coming from the right side of the truck when you’re inside the truck on the drivers side. Not worried about it, but it tends to be annoying sometimes.

Exactly the same as me. I figure it's either the Water Pump or a pulley. even after all my mods its still there...lol... Maybee the TQ could me making noise.

Maybe the torque converter, but i’m leaning more towards the A/C compressor on mine. That ***** SLAMS on when you turn the A/C on. Sounds like someone rear ended you tbh. Plus, it’s there in park too, so i don’t know. I tell my friends it’s a supercharger.
