Why are there so few 6’4 long beds out there?

Purchased a 2017 Ram 1500 Sport crew cab with the 6’4 bed. And I barely see any other ones out there, most everyone else goes with the short 5’7 bed.

I love my long bed, rides really nice. Just curious what the opinion are out there on short vs long.

I don’t really use my bed much, just love driving a truck. But it sure is nice to have for when I’ll need it!

Kick ass truck man.

Most people dont want/need that.

I will get the biggest cab and bed i can.

Also the dealers usually have WAY more short beds on the lot.

I miss my 6’ 4” bed on my 03. It wasn’t a absolute requirement on my new truck, I was going from a quad to crew. and it’s hard to find them. I don’t use it all the time but I’d say 1 out of 3 times I wish I would of found a 6’ 4”.

Thanks guys, I think the answer to my question is, the 1500 Sport being, well, a Sport, tends to sell better with the short bed.

I think I found a somewhat rare one. Very happy with it.

PS I’m a first time Ram owner, traded up from a VW Jetta... it’s been a great switch!

I could be mistaken, but I think there were a couple years that the crew cab long bed combo was not available on the 1500.

I’m pretty sure the crew 6’ 4” on a 1500 wasn’t available till 2013 with the refresh and the “RAM” division.

All 2017-later SLT QuadCabs (that I know of) should come with the 6'4" bed... though there's times when I wish I had the 8' bed. My GVWR says I still got 1700 lbs payload (including my 180lb butt), and it'd be nice to maximize that since 3.21 gearing + 3.6 v6 says that I can't tow too awful much.

It's two reasons:

1. Crew cab plus short bed fits in what used to be the standard garage depth, and,

2. Shorter turning radius for ease of daily driving. I can tell you there are many parking garages in the cities that can accommodate the standard height of RAM 1500s but absolutely not the length of a crew cab with 6'-4" bed.

My 2014 1500 Sport was a crew cab, 6'-4" bed

My 2019 1500 5th Gen is a crew cab, 6'-4" bed.

My 2015 3500 dually is a crew cab, 8'-2" bed.

I've got to be able to carry 4'x8' cleanly with tailgate up or with tailgate down and an AMP bed extender!

All quad cabs since the 3rd gen are 140” wheelbase with the 6’4” bed.

I have a 6'4 bed I think its better for them to ship a 5'7 truck because its smaller. I had a 5'7 also and could not even fit a ladder

This is my 2014 1500 with a 6’4” box, 5.7, 3:92 gears. I have only had it just over a week. I hope this thing treats me right. I previously had a Tacoma and Tundra so not sure what to expect from Ram.

They hold up incredibly well, truth be told. Just out of principle, I'd go over it with a fine-toothed comb only because it's 5 years old, and then I'd hit the maintenance schedule (in the owner's manual) to do everything they recommend for your truck's age and mileage. But I'd do that no matter what brand was on the side. :)

PS: Lots of us here in Oregon - welcome!

The thing I carry the most often is my road bicycle, and that doesn't fit in the short bed. I didn't need a crew cab (kids are grown), so the quad is perfect for my wife and I.

I park in parking garages at work and when I go downtown and the long trucks are just too much hassle. I've seen the special "back in all the way, and I mean all the way" to get the long trucks to park.

I put in the cargo platform in the back, so on road trips we put up the seat, fold that out, add a blanket and our Corgi gets the whole backseat to himself. He loves it. I've only had a person in the backseat once in the year I've had the truck.
