A simple question I'm hoping you guys will answer. I have the stainless works lt headers with cats going into their true dual chambered mufflers. The sound is great but I think I want it a little louder is there any reason not to take off the cats? Will I loose mpg or performance I don't have any emissions testing where I live so that's not a big deal I was just wondering what you guys thought and any advice you could give.
Thank you

Catalytic converters are strictly for emissions. Remove them if you do not need them. My opinion atleast. You wont lose MPG and you may gain a slight bit.

I have the catless stainless works headers waiting to be installed, and have been trying to decide whether or not to buy cats....

Let me know what you decide and I might be able to send you up the portion that bypasses the cats and you can send down the cats...

Edit: Only reason I am considering cats is because we have emissions testing, and they are making it to where it will be harder to buy the fake inspection sticker, because it will only be one sticker for registration and inspection.

I think if you have any kind of emmissions testing in your area you will get into a bit of trouble without. If you don't- then I don't see why keeping them matters. Yank 'em. Would you need a tuner to adjust the control module to ignore the code it'll throw?

Removing the cats will throw a code for your rear sensors, so you would need a custom tune to disable the rear sensors and eliminate the engine code.

Gm enthusiast I don't have kids hate em matter of fact and when I'm on shut down or on extended days off at my plant I prefer to drive up north and run over baby harp seals with my truck that's why I'm lookin to gain that little extra hp to chase em down......

Matt to my understanding I think Sean already just said f it and deleted me rear 02s in my tune Because we were having troubles with my truck throwing cels eve with the cats

BlkXpress I might be interested in taking those pipes off your hands if you do decide to go with cats cause I was wondering what I was going to do to fill the hole they will leave I didn't really want to weld a pipe in just incase I need to go back to cats so let me know

If he knew you had longtubes, then he likely has already disabled the rear sensors. Most longtube setups with high flow cats, with the exception of the most recent ARH kits, will still throw a CEL for the rear sensors. Because of this, Sean automatically disables the rear sensors if he knows that you have headers. If you want louder, I would just swap mid pipes with BlkXpress.

Doesn't really matter if you have emission testing where you live...if you get pulled over and a cop takes a look it's up to a $10,000.00 fine. Cats are federal law...your state laws don't matter.

Not hardly :/

And to receive a federal fine you would have to be busted by someone with a federal agency so if a state or local police pulled you over and looked, it would be a state penalty.

Stop trying to make people scared

I looked into this when I did my exhaust. No mufflers with an H pipe duals is the path I chose. The cats that dodge uses r already extremely high flow. They only produce about 3psi of back pressure. Plus that is like one of the main things that let's u know your engine running right. The computers r not something I would want to render unable to tell me my engine isn't breathing properly. In my opinion, cats r good unless u making your truck a straight drag only truck. I'm a dog guy but these cats I would say keep.

I *think* it is only federally regulated at production- meaning all vehicles need to leave the plant meeting the standards. After that I believe it is in the hands of local authorities in smog-sensative states and provinces. We don't have emmissions standards or checks here, but Ontario does as an example. And I think California is one of the strictest, isn't it?

I could be totally wrong though...

You couldn't possibly be more wrong and all I'm trying to do is lay out all the facts...not scare anyone. You can't make an informed decision unless you're informed. State police can and do fine people for removing cats. In Texas the DPS does it regularly. States have differing fines but you can definitely be fined in all 50 states. State fines also run in the thousands of dollars....hence why I said "up to $10K"
Texas starts at $2750.00 IIRC.

Im not worried. Ive been pulled over well over 30 times in 6 states and never been asked to look at my exhaust. And a federal fine is $2500. You are right states vary.
