I have the tinting exemption on all of my vehicles here in NY, because of a skin condition that my wife has. Any vehicle she regularly rides in can get the exemption (in case she regularly rides in other people's cars).
With the exemption, there are no limits on tinting. I can have limo tint on every window, including the full windshield.
Now, this exemption does not prevent you from getting pulled over for it. I have been pulled over twice already. I had to inform the officer that there was such a thing as an exemption.
Last month, my wife got a ticket for a turning onto a restricted road (no turns onto the road 7-9 am) at 8:50 am. The officer issued her 2 tickets, one for tinting. The officer never asked her if she had the exemption (that was displayed as per guidelines), and simply handed her the printouts right before he walked away and left. She never had the opportunity to read the tickets, until after she got to work.
I am upset by how NYS executed the exemption. It is a paper sticker (you are allowed to laminate it) that must be attached on the INSIDE in the middle of any window except the windshield. It is really hard to see the sticker. There should be a sticker outside the vehicle so when they see it, they leave you alone.
I have factory matching tinting on my front side windows, and plan to almost limo tint the rear side windows and back window at some point.
