I have the tinting exemption on all of my vehicles here in NY, because of a skin condition that my wife has. Any vehicle she regularly rides in can get the exemption (in case she regularly rides in other people's cars).

With the exemption, there are no limits on tinting. I can have limo tint on every window, including the full windshield.

Now, this exemption does not prevent you from getting pulled over for it. I have been pulled over twice already. I had to inform the officer that there was such a thing as an exemption.

Last month, my wife got a ticket for a turning onto a restricted road (no turns onto the road 7-9 am) at 8:50 am. The officer issued her 2 tickets, one for tinting. The officer never asked her if she had the exemption (that was displayed as per guidelines), and simply handed her the printouts right before he walked away and left. She never had the opportunity to read the tickets, until after she got to work.

I am upset by how NYS executed the exemption. It is a paper sticker (you are allowed to laminate it) that must be attached on the INSIDE in the middle of any window except the windshield. It is really hard to see the sticker. There should be a sticker outside the vehicle so when they see it, they leave you alone.

I have factory matching tinting on my front side windows, and plan to almost limo tint the rear side windows and back window at some point.

Oh man, yeah they need to change the notification sticker somehow.
What factory tint did you go with for your sides?

I have a guy that does my tinting. He doesn't have a shop. He did my Audi tint in his home garage must be 9 years ago. He did my truck 2 years ago. I asked him to make the tinting match the rear factory glass and this this is what it looks like. I am not sure of what % tinting it is, but it matches very well.

I will go back to him when I have $$ burning a hole in my pocket (my motorcycle seems to take all that money) and get tinting over the rear factory glass.

So I have a crew cab and want to get my driver and passenger side windows tinted. Curious, is the factory tint for second row of the crew cab 20%. I was debating between either 20% or 35% for the front windows and do 5% strip on the windshield. If you have 20%, how hard is it to see out at night? Appreciate any info!

I have 20 and on dark country roads with no lights I pretty much can’t see anything. If I have to turn down a street I have to roll my window down. In the city I don’t have any issues.

Here in the People's Republik of Kalifornia, the law says 70%. That said, I've been running around at 25% for years without issue.

Here in Wa state, it's "shall be more than 24% visibility" so I'll be getting 25%. Wa cops are pretty quick to flip on the lights and I don't want to deal with removing it. In my 53 years of life, I had been pulled over 1 time, but since I moved to Wa a year or so ago, I've been stopped twice. I'm not saying I wasn't driving a bit over the speed limit, but nothing more than I always have.

I've got the legal MS limit for front windows- 28%. It's perfect for me. Can see out just fine both on dark and lighted roads at night and still keeps sun out in day time. I THINK that the back windows are tinted a little lighter than 20%. I wouldn't want the front windows darker than the rear, but that's just me.

I did 20% upfront, 50% on winshield, and 50% on rears. I didn't want the rears to get any darker but I wanted to take advantage of the UV resistance. The factory rear tint is all glamour, does not help with heat/UV transfer into the cab. JIC no one has mentioned it yet. Total cost out the door $300.

No issues seeing out at night.

20% at least i also have 40% on the entire windshield. Of course this all depends on your states laws. I will say that with the dark side windows the windshield doesnt even look tinted from the outside but you can tell on the inside. Yes it does seem dark at night but nothing a good set of LED's cant fix.

Good to know about issues on country roads. I don't drive on them much at night, so still thinking 20% would be best when weighing pros/cons.

I have 20% on fronts and a windshield strip...matches stock rear tint well...the only issue I have is leaving work at night turning at an unlit intersection...there is no problem seeing oncoming traffic....but I do lower my window go be sure there is no pedestrian traffic because I cannot see silhouettes in the unlit rural intersections....20200101_203847.jpg 20191221_153451.jpg

That looks sharp! For the most part where I live, areas are lit, but every now and then I do go down country roads.... So I may rethink 20 tint. I do really like how 20 looks and a lot of my driving is day time or evening before dark.
