I'm looking for some solid advice on exhaust mods. A little background, I'm currently under warranty and want to stay that way. Having said that I want to maximize HP and Torque gains with bolt on mods. Thus far I have invested in the Bully dog GT for Hemi. I plan on a CAI, Moes 85mm ported throttle body and an exhaust system. I have a few questions concerning exhaust systems.

I'm currently looking at the Magnaflow Catback 1-2 dual with 22" muffler.
I am not concerned with looks and don't really need it LOUD, what I want to do is maximize performance for my money.
I guess I need exhaust 101.

If I am not concerned with looks is going with a dual Catback really buying me anything?

Should I just buy the Magnaflow muffler for $600 less and use the stock pipes?

Would I consider a Cat mod? Is a Cat mod buying me performance?

Please help me out..........

Any cat back system is emissions legal and pretty much warranty legal. Magnaflow makes a great system and a cat back with a tune and TB should free up some HP. I will warn you that a tune is TOTALLY obvious and will void a warranty pretty quickly. Mfgs are being real ****** about it.

Cat back means behind the stock cats and back, with all else remaining stock.

Just have to return it to stock before taking it to the dealer if you tune it.

i put on some flowmaster 40 (true dual) $350 installed. Sounds great and wouldn't go with a weak magnaflow lolololol!

i went with a 16 inch magna flow, out to 4th gen tips, and haven't regretted it since, its not loud until 2000 rpm, then it gets quiet again, its a low rumble sound. i'd do it all over again if i had to.

gained like 1 mpg. its not like flow master where it's just sound, it's actual performance.

and they don't rust like flow master either.

Yeah, but they can tell if the ECM has been flashed. I actually bought a second ECM for my G8 and used it if I had an issue.

wont that raise an issue also though? since the car will have more miles but when you put the stock ecm back it wont show very many key cycles or something like that? i think i read about something like this back when we didnt have tuning and doing a pcm swap to a 2010 one was our only option

It depends on the manufacturer and the age of the car. The newer ones really log a bunch of data. In the end, I've never had to bring my car back to the dealer so it's not been an issue.

I'm just saying that a tune IS a good way to lose warranty. I've seen it happen with GM. They've gotten wise to us.

yea i agree with you on that but since most people will not abuse their vehicles too much i dont think it will be a huge problem specially on these 4th gen trucks that there isnt many options for aftermarket cams but yea if you have a tune and they can prove that caused whatever problem you have will void the warranty really quick

So going back to my original question. There is nothing more to be gained going with a dual Cat back vs just a single out?
Concerning the tune and the ECM trail. Bully Dog boasts that if you go back to manufacture setting and remove the Tuner that the dealership would NOT be able to tell. I guess I'm kinda going with there claim.

Thanks for all the input!!!!

There is a little to be gained by going to a an x-piped dual system (true dual), and not much by going to a full dual w/o x, or h-pipe, and nothing to be gained by going to a cat back dual.

Swapping a different muffler into the stock system will result in minor gains, and is cheaper than paying for a full system. If you want to spend a little more, have them swap in an aftermarket y-pipe while they are under there for better throttle response ($125+/-).

I personally am a fan of the flowmasters over the magnaflows, but have run both with equal success lol.

I hope that answers all your questions lol.

Also, be cautious of the problems with drone. It sounds a lot like a 4 banger with an open exhaust running hard when they go into eco mode at 70mph. If you disable mds then it just sounds like a smooth V8 should.

Thanks jlb. I plan on doing the work myself when talking about the boot on type exhaust ie.........magnaflow, flow master etc ........ Can you expound a bit on the Y pipe? How it works, the advantage and also where I would find it? Is it also something I can manage myself w/o having to weld?
Thanks.......

ok ok ok...........So instead of being the guy with all the questions I'm gonna try and figure some of this out by meaningful research and of course from the knowledge of some of you guys.
From what I have deduced thus far by calling my dealership and reading for the last several hours(day off). Is that most of the restrictions from todays exhaust systems comes from the CATS and not necessarily the Mufflers or anything else CATBACK. Dealership says that removing/replacing the CATS WILL negate my warranty. Yes there are claims of small HP gains etc.....aside from that it seems like most guys are going for noise. Noise is cool if thats what you want. I do not want noise, I have a HD Fatboy to **** MY neighbors off......whooohooo!!! I want more ponies..........

So until my warranty is up I am going to leave the exhaust alone or at least put it on the back burner so to speak and concentrate on maybe the throttle body and a CAI. Speaking of CAI's on these new trucks, it looks to me that, stock, they have the intake box pulling its air from outside the engine compartment moreless in a closed off space in the Quarter panel. It would seem to me that dropping in a good K&N should open it up sufficiently enough.........am I wrong on this???
Just some thoughts!
Thanks for your input!
