Ok, so there is your left and right axle shafts connecting from your differential to your wheel hubs, and then of course your drive shaft connecting to the differential.
I believe your probably talking about your axle shaft to "wheel hub bearing". Does that sound right?

In this diagram you have your axle shaft #3, connecting to your wheel hub bearing #5. The wheel hub bearings do sometimes go bad. Usually with a bad grinding sound.
