Makes great sense now. In July drove an hour in stop and go traffic, at outside air temp 119 degrees, tranny was 186, pulled into a store while the wife went in, sat in park on fresh blacktop and the temp spiked up to 205 - 210, AC on full. Shortly thereafter installed the AtS bypass never saw those temps again. Been towing he boat this summer, hardly gets over 180, during an hour drive in hilly desert terrain.

The only thing that ticks me off, is I found out about this bypass about a week after just replacing mine. :mad::banghead:

How does installing this bypass valve affect us living in colder climates. Just results in the oil taking longer to get warm, so firmer shifts until it gets there?

I've been in my freezing temps with my 2010 rfe before they even started putting these devices in, even drove through a blizzard, and the truck shifted fine. I think the main function of these devices are so that it will tank your transmision earlier so you will have to buy a new truck, because rfe's cost way more then the new 8 speeds. I literally believe this was the goal behind it. They know better then ayone heat is the enemy of transmision life, and yet they choose to put heat into every rfe that were already built weak in the first place?

THe FCA assholes can literally aim a tempature to when the transmision will fail soon as possible after warranty. Operating tempature of every fca transmision has gone up since 2010. Jeez, what is the operating temp of the new 8 speed? Hits it squarely at 100k miles before an expected failure. Yes many transmisions will go futher, but that is not how you guage it, you guage it by average failure rates. 8 speeds are still new, but expect some info on this in the upcoming years.

Which temp do you want your personal transmision to oprate at? Um, Ill take the last line thank you. Below 175f, I have towed and traveled and I have never came close to 175f, I am glad I didn't have to replace that vavle because my truck never had one.

What's worse is the 8 speed is going to be shifting up and down constantly...causing friction...creating heat.

Chrysler\Dodge has been known for crap like this for a long time. Way back in the 80's they had it "programmed" for a certain number of key starts to trigger the CEL to come on. Nothing wrong, just have to get it reset.

Just got my bypass delivered. Is it as easy as it looks to replace? Maybe 15-20min.?

I have been having great temps considering I am pulling heavy. Runs between 168-175 but if I can get some cooler reading than that I would be a happy camper. Plus it sounds like it will make flushing the system a whole lot easier. If I get a chance this week I will try to install it after work one day. Otherwise it will be this weekend.

Ok... so it is not nearly as easy as I thought it would be. It took me almost an 1 1/2 hours due to the limited space. Crows Foot Wrench would have helped but I imagine as large as these fittings are they would be a pretty penny. The smallest fitting was a 20mm. Not sure what the larger ones are. I ended up using a Cresent on the large fittings. Also, I don't know if it's is due to my driveway being on an incline but I had a lot more fluid come out than I was expecting. I would say a good quart came out. Another thing that I hope I didn't screw the pooch on is I did not use the new larger fittings that came with the bypass, I just used the old ones. Hopefully this doesn't create a leak later on down the road. I will be pulling my trailer around some this weekend but ambient temps are supposed to be much lower so this will probably not be a good comparison.

Pulled 13,000+ pounds around this weekend & trans temp never went above 150*. Grant it the ambient temps were only 75 but I am still averaging 20-30* lower than I was before removing the valve.
Has anyone noticed any benefits to adding an aluminum trans oil pan? With as cool as I am running now, I can't justify spending nearly $250 if I am not getting any benefits other than a drain plug.

Has anyone installed the ATS thermal bypass valve on a 66rfe 5.7 Hemi?

My original 66rfe lasted 68,000.....just had a Jasper 66rfe installed and the temps are reaching 190-194 on a 40 mile highway running 60-65 mph with an outdoors temp of 45-55 degrees. That's NOT even towing or hauling anything. The trans guy is saying that's normal....Jasper is saying the temps could go up to 220, but shouldn't stay above 200 for any "extended period of time". I can't imagine 190-194 with no weight is "normal".

Btw....it's a 2013 Ram 2500 4x4...the new trans only has about 500 miles on it.

It was absolutely worth it. My trans temp has never got above 155 since, and that’s pulling 10k in the mountains.
