I have 3.55s now. I'm towing on Saturday so we'll see how it goes. But my truck is a tow rig/occasional driver. I'm just thinking a tuner and gears would make a world of difference.

Will 4.56s be too low for stock tires?

i think 4.10's will be your best bet with stock tires.

The tires will hold up as long as you don't exceed the load rating.

4:10's are a great compromise for towing and unloaded driving.

4.56 will be fine with stock tires and be much easier on your drivetrain when towing.

With Stock Tires I Like the 4.10 Idea. Mines an 03 and 4.56.'s With 285 Tires Load Range E and 55 PSI She Rides Nice and Tows no Probs especially with the HD 4/1 springs and front level. I've Towed smaller 4000 Lb Trailer with 355's and it was a dog. May as well stay in OD/Off and not exceed 55 MPH. On hills you will struggle

Bottum line IMO is if your gonna spend the dough on gears go 4.56 and up the Tires to LT285/70/17. Ideally when I cruise at 80 MPH (Only in Rush Hour) I'm Reving 2500 so I would like to up that to 35's which should put it in the sweet spot at about 75 mph.

Thanks for the input guys.

I think I'd rather bee geared too low than not low enough. I have the stock 20s and tires right now.

Here's my setup (with the old truck)

2011-05-01_17-17-42_660.jpg

It comes in around 6500 lbs. I have a Reese weight dist hitch and brakes on both axles. So it should pull fine. I was just kicking around gears.

Where are you guys buying your gearsets and install kits through?

3rd strike performance is a vendor on here and can hook you up. 4.56s will not be too low.

I would highly suggest 4.56 gearing. If the size of your stock 20's is 275/60-20 then that tire should be 33" tall. I have 4.56 gears on mine with 315/70-17 tires which are supposed to be 34.4" tires (measure 33" while on the truck) and my rpms at 70mph in OD are right at 2,200. The funny thing is, fuel efficiency has gone up since the gear change from the original 3.92's with these same tires for both city and highway driving. It hasn't been earth-shattering, but between 1 and 2 mpg average. I am VERY HAPPY with my decision to go with 4.56's, which was based in part on the suggestions and reviews by many others just like you are beginning to see. My biggest concern was protecting the transmission! I don't haul very often, but when I do, I won't have to worry so much.

To help you with your decision, go to Accu Auto Parts - Installation and Tech Help Apps and click on "Tech" located on the upper right corner of the red bar area. On the page it sends you, click "Gear Ratio Calculators" located on the left side of the white area. This will get you to a very informative calculations page that will let you know what to expect. I have used this many times in the past and it is very accurate from what I have found.

Don't fear the gear! (Fear the cheap brands) I think, with the Hemi especially that 4.56s would be ideal for towing.

I've had the "lowest cost" gears in a truck before, I regretted 'saving' the money.
I've had great luck with the Yukon Gears from Randy's P&P. Just as quiet as stock.

I've spoken with the rep from dynatrac before and he said that they all pretty much come from the same 2 factories overseas.

In my jeeps I've had great luck with g2 and superior.

Here's a question. What axles are in the 4x4 ram? And are they external shim like they chrysler 8.25 or do the carrier shims go under the bearings?
