2005 5.7 went into limp mode

My 5.7 2005 ram had 211,000 miles on it. I experienced it going into limp mode over Thanksgiving weekend. I was leaving town to drive 6 hours back home when it seemed to be stuck in 3rd gear. I pulled over, checked the codes p0700 and p0876. I checked the fluid, level and color fine, no abnormal smell. Shut it down, turned key to "on", cleared the codes and haven't had any issues since. Any ideas on what caused this?

Mice chewing on the harness ?
Corrosion in the harness connections?
How are the differential and transaxle fluids ?
Thermal protections can be lost with age even though the fluid looks fine.
