Hey guys!
I have had a 26’ Ran Big Horn Hurricane SO since September of 25’. I test drove the new first Hemi on the lot, the Hurricane and the Pentastar all in same day. Really felt the Hurricane is what I wanted. Long story short. After 3,000 miles I started getting check engine lights. It’s been to my dealer 8-9 times and they’ve had it for 48 total combined days. I don’t know exactly what the code was but it is “rich to lean” bank 2 turbo. I’ve had several o2 sensors replaced and several different techs check it out. Last time it was in they said they were gonna do a pcm swap per Chrysler Star board, I think it’s called. But during that time a flash update came out to specifically fix this issue. Luckily my truck was still there and they did the update and for 3 weeks it was ok. Came on again last week and I took it back. Service guy said try a can of octane boost and run 91,93 octane when I fill up next. Now I have been running 87 and last 2 fill ups have been 89 while filling up roughly 1/2 tank. Last 2-3 days and it hasn’t been on. Neighbors son in law was getting same code and runs premium fuel and it goes away.
Is this ******** or what.
Why does the HO need premium and the 2.0 hurricane need premium but the SO doesn’t. I feel like most of the engine lights guys are getting is due to ****** 87 or 89 fuel.

as far as im concerned any turbo gas engine should always run 91 or better. the octane number we see at the pump is a measure of resistance to (pre)detonation. the lower the number the easier it is for the gasoline to auto ignite (bad)
the engine computer will do everything possible to avoid predetonation, including pulling power in extreme circumstances.

with 2 turbos and limited cooling space/area im sure the engineers specd 91 for both so and ho but were overridden by management at some point.

FWIW, I purchased 26 BH 3.0 SO in November 2025 and have run strictly 87, never had a problem. I believe there's something else going on with your truck.

I’m new to the SO as of this past Friday and haven’t read the manual yet….however.

Many manuals about turbo engines that state that 87 is ok, it usually includes the phrase “Top Tier Fuel”. ie, engine cleaning additives are in the mixture.

Look up the stations you typically use and see if they obtain fuel from “Top Tier Fuel” providers.

If not, it could be an explanation.

Direct injection turbo engines are also sensitive to poor quality fuel. Even if you have the requirement for 91 octane, poor quality fuel can still cause knock and other issues. A lot of times the factory tune is really 91 but it can derate for running 87. The hemi has had 89 octane recommended for a long time with 87 acceptable. Boost will just make hurricanes more sensitive.

just doesn’t n make sense that no one can figure it out. It’s been looked at by several diff techs. You’d think someone would mention that. I know 8 guys driving the hurricanes and mines the only recurring issue. It’s been off since last Thursday now since I put in a tank of boost from auto zone. Haven’t had the chance to fill up with 91 yet. If that’s the case they should just say use midgrade or premium. I could care less about the performance as I’m concerned with the light coming on. If I do ignore it, knowing my luck it’s a real major issue.

Frustrating for sure. I know with my last truck, GMC Canyon with the turbo 4, they recommended 87 “Top Tier”. Since I use Wawa most of the time and they’re not on the top tier approved list, though state they use detergents, I always just used 89 to at least know that I am above the 87 rating.

I however do not daily drive so the extra costs are only realized a couple of times a month for me. I still whine about it, but just not as much as the next guy. ;)

The HO and 2.0 run more boost than the SO, that's probably the big driving factor for needing higher octane fuel.
Aa mentioned above, not sure why any force induction engine should be ran on 87 octane. I won't blame this on the spark plugs, it is turbo charged but runs on the wrong fuel... LOL
If one has a "spirited" driving style, it could also influence needing to run a higher octane fuel.
Have you saved copies of all the paperwork for the service work that has been done on this truck? I'd contact a a lemon-law lawyer with as much as this vehicle has been back to the shop.

Yes! I have copies of everything but can’t lemon law it as I already accepted a cash and keep with Chrysler. Got my down payment and 7 months of payments back and can do whatever with the truck. But if I trade it in I’m pretty much where I was in September and starting over. Only get whatever my trade in would be. If I can get it figured out it’s a huge savings. About 40%. And probably going back to a Hemi which is really going backwards after owning one of these things. If it’s just fuel then I’ll run 91. And another 12 days in the shop and I can open another case with Chrysler. Haha
