I accidentally posted this in the 3rd gen section earlier.

Alright everyone here it is!

I have a 2001 Ram 2500 4x4, with a 360. I just hit 75,000 miles and am having some issues. This is a plow truck and it is my favorite plow truck. This past weekend we got some serious snow, which meant about 65 hours of running my truck.

I had some overheating of the transmission and some slipping most of the weekend, but figured out how to run it and make it work. By the end of yesterday it started misfiring and then I lost my reverse gear. So I am definitely going to be rebuilding the trans.

My initial thought was that the misfiring was maybe water in my distributor cap. That was until I put my hand up to the exhaust and it's sucking. So I'm going to need pull my heads.

I figure this spring or summer I am going to just pull the drivetrain and do a fresh rebuild of both. With that in mind I want to use the most reliable parts and make this thing do some work.

Reliability is 1st on my list
Low end grunt is 2nd
and I want to keep cost minimal.

I am thinking about rebuilding and fixing whatever issues the 46re has (i know there are a few from the factory) and rebuilding the 360 with heads and a cam (nothing too crazy).

I want to hear what other parts to look into and what cams and heads would get me what I want. I would want to run regular fuel as this is a work truck.

The goal is to make this thing last and wake it up a little in the process. I have read some info about all of this but know that there is probably some serious knowledge here to help me with this specific build.

I also want to note that this will be my both my first engine rebuild and tranny rebuild. I have pulled engines and transmissions and done heads and stuff but am really excited to do this.

Thank you for making it through all of that and any help! If anyone needs more info, I probably missed some stuff.

For low end grunt on a budget:
Keep stock kegger
Port stock tb
EQ heads (don't crack like stock and they flow more AND they're fairly cheap)
RV cam
Shorty headers with 2" true dual+x pipe or 2.5" single pipe
Sct Tuning via FlyinRyan

Trans:
Bigger cooler+fan
check valve delete
Deep aluminum pan (b&m)
Sonnax SureCure
PATC tq converter
temp gauge (b&m pan has a port)

Awesome! Thanks for the quick response.

This is about what I was thinking on everything. Just needed some more experienced advice.

So a Sonnax Surecure kit fixes a lot of the issues with these transmissions. I'm assuming I would also need to get a seperate rebuild kit to include all the parts I need. Lastly what is the deal with these transgo kits? Are they similar to a surecure?

Again never done a transmission and not entirely sure about what everything is. Just want to get everything I can to make this thing last and make sure i'm getting the correct parts.

Thanks for the help!

Yes. You can actually swap instructions and still do it right. Only difference is the transgo kit has you modify the separator plate by drilling larger exhaust ports for trans fluid. This is what makes the transgo kits a "shift kit" and not a "problem solver" like the sonnax. Basically prolongs the life of the clutches and shifts gears faster, but also causes harsher shifts.

Didn't know that. Should've gone that route myself lol. Still have my old valvebody thigh so i could i guess

A518/46RE Dodge Truck Stage 1 Performance Transmission

Im considering just bolting a transmission in and replacing the heads with EQ for now. I would really hate to miss another snow storm! What are your thoughts on this? It says it has a stage 1 shift kit. I wonder if that's just a transgo kit or something. They also sell a stock one. I'm curious if this one would solve 46re crappy issues. Or do you all know of any transmission rebuilders who install surecure/transgo kits?
