I accidentally posted this in the 3rd gen section earlier.
Alright everyone here it is!
I have a 2001 Ram 2500 4x4, with a 360. I just hit 75,000 miles and am having some issues. This is a plow truck and it is my favorite plow truck. This past weekend we got some serious snow, which meant about 65 hours of running my truck.
I had some overheating of the transmission and some slipping most of the weekend, but figured out how to run it and make it work. By the end of yesterday it started misfiring and then I lost my reverse gear. So I am definitely going to be rebuilding the trans.
My initial thought was that the misfiring was maybe water in my distributor cap. That was until I put my hand up to the exhaust and it's sucking. So I'm going to need pull my heads.
I figure this spring or summer I am going to just pull the drivetrain and do a fresh rebuild of both. With that in mind I want to use the most reliable parts and make this thing do some work.
Reliability is 1st on my list
Low end grunt is 2nd
and I want to keep cost minimal.
I am thinking about rebuilding and fixing whatever issues the 46re has (i know there are a few from the factory) and rebuilding the 360 with heads and a cam (nothing too crazy).
I want to hear what other parts to look into and what cams and heads would get me what I want. I would want to run regular fuel as this is a work truck.
The goal is to make this thing last and wake it up a little in the process. I have read some info about all of this but know that there is probably some serious knowledge here to help me with this specific build.
I also want to note that this will be my both my first engine rebuild and tranny rebuild. I have pulled engines and transmissions and done heads and stuff but am really excited to do this.
Thank you for making it through all of that and any help! If anyone needs more info, I probably missed some stuff.
