I was climbing a steep hill that was rutted up, washed out and alot of loose gravel. I put it in 4 low and as i did i noticed the the 4 low light continued to blink. I wasnt sure if it was supposed to stop or not. Ive only used 4wd twice in the 2.5 years of owning the truck and it worked last time i used it. As i started up the hill i could tell the 4wd was engaged. At a steady slow crawl up the hill as i hit a washed out spot i heard a pop that i thought was a rock or gravel getting pulled up as i continued up but then my service 4wd light came on and put me back in 2wd right in the middle of the hill. I backed the dial back to 2wd and tried to go back in 4wd but it wouldnt allow me to. I managed to get up the hill in 2wd after a few tries of getting hung up on the rocks in the road and tires spinning in loose gravel. I stopped and checked everything underneath just to make sure nothing was physically broken and of course it was dark but i didnt see anything broke or leaking. So i continued the 30 mile trip home and everything seemed fine. After i turned the truck off for about an hour and back on the service light was off. I ran it through the 4wd selections and everything engaged and back to 2wd. I had to make a 200 mile trip the next day and i noticed as i slowed down to a stop i could here a winding noise on the passenger side which is also where i heard the pop. But my 295 60 20 toyo open country extremes are somewhat worn so that could be the winding i was hearing but i hadnt noticed until now. I stopped in a parking lot and played with the 4wd and once the 4wd low engaged. Then everytime after that it would blink until it went back to 4 high. I never got a another service 4wd light. What causes it to not go into 4low and stay in 4high? If anybody has any info or help with this i would appreciate it! Thanks.

Not sure on your year. But on mine to engage 4l you have to put truck in neutral.

I also let each setting engage before going to the next. I have the knob selector. I dont turn it all the way to 4low first. Not sure if it matters or not i just feel better doing that way lol

Aside from shifting into low range with the transmission in neutral, it helps to be rolling slightly (owners manual states less than 5mph).
I'll usually try to shift the truck into 4X4 ever couple of months just to help keep the shifting mech moving free.

Yeah i probably need to check the transfer case fluids. Im usually pretty good about the normal fluids. I just dont get why the service light came on and then it cleared itself.

If the light came on, there should be code stored. Have it read so you know what is going on.
