5.7 Hemi "blew up" by dealership?

Last I knew, a "new" 5.7 hemi in the crate, direct from the Chyrsler mother ship was around $8500 alone. Add another couple grand for labor and incidentals. Is a 2015 Ram 1500 w/ 140K miles on it worth that kind of coin?

My 6.4 Hemi recently failed in a somewhat similar manner. Flashing CEL came on indicating a cylinder misfire. Dealer swapped a coil pack that was being shown as bad and it the problem shortly came back (while they still had the truck) and they said it needed a whole new long block. From poking around online and talking to the dealer it was about at 13K repair total (thankfully, I have a lifetime Maxcare warranty that covered me). +/- 9K for the engine and another +/- 4K in parts and other things.

As for it being the dealer's fault? IMO, it's not... just because it happened to fail in their hands doesn't automatically make it their fault.

First of all, I am no mechanic so bear with me. Bought this truck new in 2015, serviced regularly and never had a single issue until about a month ago. The malfunction indicator light came on and I noticed I was getting approx 2.5 MPG less than normal. A guy I know that owns a shop ran the code and showed me where cylinder 3 was misfiring. He replaced 1 (or 2?) oxygen sensors and said I should be good to go. Light came back on. Changed the plugs and ignition coil. Light came back on. This time I took to local dealership. They said two cylinders were misfiring and diagnosed two bad fuel injectors. I gave the thumbs up to replace the two fuel injectors and they told me they would call when it was ready to pickup. A few days later dealership called and told me they changed the two injectors and fired the truck up to test drive it... then it "blew up". I was furious obviously. They said it was no fault of their own. They said if I drove it 1 mile further it would have "blown up" on me. They said that a lifter broke. After taking it apart they called again to say they were wrong (again) and that it was a piston rod that broke.

Now I'm left with two options: Pay them to install a new engine or tow my truck off their property.

I called Chrysler Corp to file a complaint on the dealership. They gave me a claim #, said they were contacting them to find out what happened and will "help me with the cost" (not getting my hopes up)

Does this BS sound legit? Do I have other options? What all comes with a new engine? Even if I go with new engine option in an older truck I am worried I will have more issues and will always be in and out of the shop

Probably had a bad cam/severe internal engine damage already that had a bunch of idiots shot gunning parts at it.

It looks like a brand new long block from Mopar is around $6000. It fits 2013-20117

Like somebody else already mentioned, now would be the time to swap in a 6.4, especially if you can do the work yourself.

I don't plan to go the remanufactured route. If I do this I will do brand new Chrysler Hemi installed by dealer. How do I go about putting better lifters in it and doing MDS delete and do you think this would void any warranty that came with the engine? I've always heard the MDS was the issue in the first place but what do I know

If it's done by the dealer i think you get a 3 year /36,000 mile warrenty with a new crate long block or complete engine from Mopar.

OP said his truck was worth 17k just before the engine crapped the bed and 2k with a blown engine so he gains 5k total after replacing it assuming about 10k for the new engine.

Warrenty with a new engine seems to be an issue with him,so dropping a 6.4 into the truck probably isn't an option,as he's going to need to tune it,to make it work,and as soon as he puts a tune on the new 6.4,his warrenty is out the door.It's a good idea,but whether it's feasable in this case,might be the million dollar question

My thoughts exactly. But as it sits my truck is worthless when one month ago the value was $17k. Which was going to be my down payment on a new one.

I hear you. I'd hate to jump back in the truck market at the moment, but still feel you'd be better off putting the ~$10K you'd put into this truck, plus what ever you could get for your 2015 towards something new/newer with a warranty.

Does your 2015 have the dial shift 8spd or the 6spd transmission? Is it 4x4? Just trying to gauge what else could go wrong with it even with a brand new engine.

what is the dealership & Ram Headquarters going to contribute to an installed Crate Engine ?

What does that make your contribution ?

What is the over all condition of your Ram ?
Will there be HEMI engines in Ram 1500s next year ?
Will computer chips be plentiful after July 2023 ?

Personally, i have decided that when my 2016 Ram ecodiesel gives up the ghost & the Ram is in otherwise good condition.
I will have a Mopar Factory Crate Eco-diesel installed.
Some jerk has discontinued Eco-Diesels in Rams

South Carolina so you could always chat with teh folks at Demon Performance for places to do the install, cheaper than the dealer.

See wht RAM will charge you for the new crate engine.
Definitely get the new long block if truck is still nice looking.
3 things provide value. Exteriro, interior drive train, you need 2 outta 3 to even get folks looinmg.

Forgeet trading in the truck, as is. Sell it outright to a mechanic who isn;t affraid of gettign a junk yard motor and running the truck until it drops.

get much more money for it.
Exactly what th dealr is oging to do, sell it to one of their mechanics or whoelsale it.

I tried that route with the trade-in.. They don't want my truck which I'm not surprised since it needs a new engine... They told me they know a guy that would give me a grand or two for it..... KBB showed $17k when it was running a month ago..

I'm just trying to understand.

Imo, if under warranty let them replace the engine and that should put you in a better position if you should decide to trade your truck off if your not satisfied. Your out some because of the "co-pay", but way better than something worth $2k sitting in your driveway as an static display ...idk.

The prices of used vehicles is down some. Dealers are not making crazy trading offers right now compared to just last year. Dealers are offering incentives on new vehicles, but aren't much.

Fwiw, if your truck is overall still in good shape keep it and have the engine replaced (at whom evers expense) and you will have come out better, $ wise?

It's not under warranty. Dealership told me I would have to pay the total cost of new engine and installation. They guessed somewhere around $10k. When I called in a complaint to Chrysler Corporate they told me they may be able to help with the cost of installation and if so, will let me know what my co-pay will be.

OP should get the new engine. Taking the couple grand as is OP would be in a hurry (I assume) to replace it and could settle for a less than optimal deal. Replacing it would allow time to look around for exactly the right truck.

Replace the motor with a factory new one and it will likely run another 150,K no problem. If chrysler helps out any significant amount it would be a no brainer in my books. 10 grand to be able to sell for 17, versus taking 2k is also a no brainer if you go that way.

Update. Dealership telling me factory crate engine is not an option. They stated they cannot get them. Gave me two options a Jasper or a factory rebuild. Jasper will cost $9200. Rebuild will cost $13000 but Chrysler has offered to contribute $4k making my cost $9000. Thoughts? I was not interested in rebuilds or Jasper but my options continue to get smaller. FML
