I always just used mobil 1 in all cars and never gavd it another thought.

Yeah me as well. A little disapointing when the tick shows up this soon, my own truck was quiet when I purchased it but sounded like a loud knock within the first 3500 miles. I wouldn't be buying another hemi personally. Next truck I will go back to the Ford windsor engines that I ran m1 forever and they were perfect. I'll but a 90's ford and fix it up before buying whatever "modern" engine is being sold these days.

I grew up in a strictly chevy household. Parents always had chevelles, novas, blazers, monte carlos, camaros. My step dad got a job 50 miles away, in came our 1st honda. 1982, i remember him bragging about the gas mileage and it needing nothing except fluids, brakes, tires. Our house became all hondas. Still had chevys as toys tho. I had all kinds of **** growing up, 1st car was a 79 trans am, 6.6 litre shaker hood, 73 camaro. Got an 86 Nissan Sentra, it treated me awesome. I became a *** car guy. To end this story, this is my 1st truck, and 1st American vehicle since i was kid. Im learning a ton here about my truck, its not all comforting, i do love this ****** truck tho!

@William Hastings i apologize if i missed you commenting on what you have done regarding the tick. here is what i recommend: given what we know about these motors ticking, and the fact that you only have 6500 miles, i would not do ANYTHING that will jeopardize your warranty. we feel very very strongly about Redline and how it treats the hemi tick (mine went away immediately and engine quieted down morr after 1400 miles) but fca doesnt jive with it. i would do everything and anything to get fca to fix your truck. sounds like you have a tech that is well aware of this issue. i would pay or bring donuts and coffee and spend some time talking to this tech. ESPECIALLY if you are now getting sounds besides ticking. its only going to get worse. have them check your manifold bolts. check that one off the list. its going to be time consuming and frustrating. stay with dealer oil changes. if the tech cant get you right with the service manager ask him for recommendations of a dealer to go to. ask around on here for dealers. once your truck gets fixed right, then switch to redline 5w30.

I'm not sure FCA doesn't jive with it, have anyone heard FCA deny coverage based on any oil brand and have the hold up in court? They have to prove the oil caused the damage, not very likely. But I understand about warranty concerns, if anyone ever deny's you don't be afraid to hire a lemon law lawyer, those are the people you hire when you are denied. I did it and the manu settled non oil issue, because manu's don't like lawyers fees and court costs and most the time they loose anyway. But yeah, if you are a warranty worry type person, run PUP unti out of warranty. Glad I am a not warranty type worrier.

I understand that logic, i was making an attempt to quiet it down some, my luck itll **** the bed right outside the warranty. I mentioned tick when i brought it in for service, i was told its normal for the amount of miles on the oil. It was only 4200. I had 1st oil change done at 1k. Honestly i dont know what oil came from factory, but it seemed louder after switching to their synthetic, guessing pp. Even tho i purchased an extended warranty, i really dont wanna rely on it, just wanted to do whats right for the motor. I appreciate your advice, and i probably will take it, but doesnt help everday hearing it on startup. I really gotta check thr manifold bolts out. Ill do that soon i hope

i hear ya. if you said you were concerned about longevity and wanted to be more proactive with your 6500 mile motor i would agree with the redline switch. but where you mentioned issues already, i would wait and get that fixed first. i would be concerned with a dealer saying that the tick is normal. curious to their answer of why the motor would tick. try out PUP. it has the fca blessing. then ride it out through your warranty. in the mean time start saving money for a nice cam and lifter package from Jay Greene with tune down the road. we are ill on this hemi road together!

So by using additves you are within the acceptable range of risk in your opinion? If you have the tick and an extended warranty, let the fker tick. Just make sure you dotted your I's and crossed your T's. Just see what spec oil, does best at it, I'd look at qsud and other high moly options.

I guess. It's not a powder or anything obvious. I'd be surprised if they could do an UOA and find the discrepancy between my oil and straight PP. I am going to mix in some 0W-40 and see how that works. It's not a constant tick or I would take it to the dealer. The main thing that worries me is the startup rattle after it's sat all weekend. Hopefully not piston slap but like you say drive it until something bad happens just have all my paperwork in hand.

I understand wanting to quiet it but if you do then FCA considers it solved. I would start with 16RamHemi's doughnut suggestion to see if you can get them to replace the lifters (and cam if damaged), then once thats done go right to redline for peace of mind.

Wow, with that much moly and some other additives, I’m surprised that don’t use it in their marketing model. Thanks for the link.

NP. I might try some just to see if its noticeable when in the oil.

With the boost it will give, I bet it would help even 5W-20 PUP to sound quiet(er).

Has been quiet every start today, i did have a little bit on this one, about 3 seconds and its gone. Was alot louder yesterday. Regardless with 6600 on it i guess im stickin with dealership changes, ill bring my own pup. If i get a louder one ill post it. Ive watched every you tube video on the tick, hard to tell what tick it is, from what ive watched manifold bolts would take longer to seal and the noise is there for alot longer.

How long did the truck sit before that start? Mine sounds similar if I leave it for 3+ days without starting it. If I start it every day and only leave it overnight between starts, that short tick doesnt happen.

FWIW I think thats just the lifters filling and shouldn't be an issue. My old Frontier did that on every start and is still kicking around just fine with about 90K miles on it.

That was about 2hrs. That was a quiet one tho, ill eventually get a nasty one. It torments me because of the mileage i keep vehicles a long time, to hear **** like this so early it just hammers home the bad decision i made to get rid of a perfectly fine suv that was paid off, 8yrs old with 56k miles on it, but i didn't love it, kids are grown, i wanted a toy snd a hobby, guess i got one

this lifter/cam talk can get frustrating and down right stressful. we take oride in our trucks and dont want issues. compound that with dealers who pkay the game and try to tell you its normal. they will also tell you that cams/lifters are not an issue. its a rare circumstance. we all know thats BS. its not worth stressing over. consider yourself lucky @William Hastings . you have a warranty. switch to pup and rp filter if they allow and drive it. keep on them about the manifold bolts. you are well aware of what to watch for. if you intend on keeping this truck long term, just start saving some money every week. you have plenty of time until your warranty goes. then when the time comes, hit up Jay Greene and get a sick cam with HC lifters and tune your engine and trans. you will forget about all the past. you will be back in love with your truck. im hoping i can get atleast a year before it pops up. i just bought my truck at end of december. the sound of a cammed hemi helps me get through these frustrating thoughts. **** i stress over a little vibration i have from my tires/wheels.

They do in a round about way, they show the results. And you know these results are real, because the formula is very similar to redline, and like redline it excels in pin and vee block testing. I think the average consumer benefits from seeing the results instead of just discusion additives?

I need you to talk to my wife, she wants to upgrade our rav 4 to a lexus, but the rav 4 is one of the best vehicles I ever owned!

Have you tried Redline 5w30 yet?

Hahaha, ill talk her into a hellcat! Seems like alot guys wives on here drive challengers or chargers. Just bought my daughter an 08 Rav, 59k miles, but it does consume oil, carfax showed that a consumption test was done at a dealer and passed. She has the 2.4ltr which i think they ditched in 09 or 10 for the 2.5.
I was all in on tryin some different oils, eventually getting to redline, but with this new loud intermittent tick, im thinking it may be better to take the advice from others here to stickin with dealership, bringing my own pup and maybe srt filter. If i have a failure ill have no issues. After a repair if it should happen, then make the switch.
I do want to do whats best for the motor, but that could possibly mask problems im already having and playing into fcas hands down the road.

One thing about the rav 4, the trans fluid is horrible, I bet you it is black on the stick. It takes 3-4 qrts Redline d6 to do a half flush just by removing trans bolt under valance or rock shield. I just cut a hole in mine, didn't want to **** with taking it off. I did two flushes got it from black to light purple, will do a third this summer, I think that will get it a nice color. But many guys on the board know about that toyota ws trans fluid, it is garbage. Change it now before it's too late, there comes a point where changing it is more dangerous then leaving it alone, at 60k miles I think that is a sweet spot for servicing that puppy. When you put the bolt back don't over torque it, just enough to not leak. I use anti sieze on ours. I bet you put 3 good trans flushes on that over this summer you will be good for 100k miles. That is our plan anyhow, the only thing that would change it is if d6 went full black like ws. The transmision is great on that thing anyhow, was before and after flush, just want to keep it that way. We have been on d6 for several months now, all is good.
