So, I know this was mentioned in a thread previously, but i can't seem to find it...

I've got two Dealer Premium Oil Changes left, which is Penzoil Ultra Platinum... but I still have a short tick at startup with PUP. Is there a moly additive or similar I can use with PUP that will alleviate the tick? Eventually I will swap to Redline but hate to waste my remaining PUP changes since they are already paid for...

I recently added some of that to my current oil to try to rid myself of some engine noise... after about 500 miles, there hasn't been any change. I just ordered two gallons of red line 5w-30.
If that doesn't help, I'm going to assume there's a mechanical problem somewhere.

Lubeguard's biotech, poor mans redline. Same technology, ester based oil soluble moly.

link, read about it.

Lol. What does that make my Redline gear oil with lubeguard in it ? ;)

The good Moly that Redline and like the Biotec has does take a while to do it's plating thing. After running PP 5W20 in my truck for the 1st 2 changes it took a little while, about 2k mi, with PUP0W40/Redline0W40 (Needed to use up the rest of my left over SRT PUP and my Hemi seems to like 0W40 better) to quiet mine back down. Lubeguard does make good stuff as I've used their Red tranny additive in the past to help my old Ford trans and their Gear additive + RL gear oil has really quieted down my noisy gears on my Challenger along with a few other vehicles.

I just had my oil changed at the dealer yesterday, they used PYB 5-20....I will be changing over to RL shortly and plan on videoing cold starts and hot idle every now and then to see if I can track any improvement of engine noise.

I have a cuple videos posted already in the "cold start/hot idle" videos thread, will get a couple more on PYB and then start tracking the RL.

I have read in a Blog that adding ProLong to PUP is a great option.

Thanks all, I had seen "Liquid Moly" on the shelf but not the LubeGuard, I'll check it out.

Can you post a video? Have you ruled out exhaust bolts? Please let us know if it works or not, we like to know about every case. Also, take not if the sound changes at all after an oil change, better or worse tells us something.

Prolong is a chlorinated paraffin, it will provide great lubrication but unfortunately also have corrosive properties. It's like doing surgery on the patient at the same time killing the patient but saying hey at least he was fixed. Use at your own risk.

So if you read the link I sent, they say they don't use mos2 (liqui moly) but rather use an organic oil soluble moly, the same kind used in oils such as redline. mos2 is powdered moly in suspension whereas the other moly is part of the formula. I make no statement which is better, maybe you have an equal chance with either at getting the tick out, I know both products have had "some" reported success. I would use 1/2 a can of the mos2 as an initial dose, my truck didn't sound good when I used the entire bottle. I will say my experience is rare, most of the reports have been positive, but in my truck I changed the oil immediately after putting in an entire bottle of mos2. I have never tried biotech, only pass along that in Corey's thread at Boob's someone reported it did kill their lifter tick.

Do us a favor, let us know if whatever you choose helped or not. We still need more people testing and reporting so we can determines all options for lubricating hemi tick, thanks Burla.

How does your Hemi sound on the PYB?

My plan is to try the LubeGuard, I only mentioned LM as it was the only thing I saw on the local parts store shelves... I'll grab some LG from Amazon.

^^^. In my 2018 6.4 7000 miles. First OC to Amsoil SS 0-40 MS 12663. Start up valve train noise each morning. Base formula was to thin. At 3000 miles OC to PUP 0-40. Start up was quieter and valve train noise was only 2-3 seconds. At 4000 miles added 10 oz of Lubeguard. First start noise is gone.

First cold start was this morning. It seems to sound close to the 5-30/0-40 PUP mix, but the lifters seem to take a bit longer to fill up. Should be able to get a video of hot idle later today. Pressure seems a bit lower than the previous mix but since the oil is so new I imagine it might end up a bit lower still.

I see there are several sizes, what's the recommended dosage/mix - ie some products say 1oz per quart, 3oz per quart of oil, etc or similar. I checked the LG site but didn't see anything specified.

PUP base oil is also thin for 0w40, it may have been better at first as the vii's are strong but like you said was still there, then moly/phos in an ester base made the noise go away. Like many of us including me, thicker viscosity isn't the answer, it is the additives and/or base oils that make the difference.

Read the link I posted, look at more information square.

Directions for Use
LUBEGARD RATIO TO GASOLINE OR DIESEL ENGINES:
• Add 3 oz. of LUBEGARD to every quart of engine oil with oil change
• 10oz, bottle treats one 3-1/2 quart system
• 15oz. bottle treats one 5 quart system

For best results, use with every oil change. LUBEGARD works immediately to form superior, long lasting lubrication to all surfaces of your engine.
