Getting ready to replace my rear axle bearings and seals in a day or two or three.

I have new e-brake shoes, but am not exactly where the proper adjustment is.

My original shoes are in good shape, but gonna change them while I've got the axle shafts pulled.

Slightly rubbing on the drum, or just shy of the rub?

Is it like normal drum brakes, where you have to adjust them from the back side by reaching through a slot with a screw driver and turning a dial?

Could be totally wrong, just my guess.

Those pads are perfect, I would not replace them. Most new ones are junk. The adjuster is on the exact opposite side of both pictures you posted. I always adjust them prior to putting the caliper back on. Adjust til you feel the very slightest drag then back off 1 click. Use a box end wrench over a lug with a lug nut over it to keep the rotor seated properly while adjusting.

Reason I asked is I had a little trouble getting the driver side rotor off, do I adjusted its star wheel in a bit. Might have just been stuck, I want to put it back right.

Might have just been stuck due to age and crust....lol.

I had a metal on metal rub sound that was very noticeable at slow speed while braking. I changed pads, but still heard the noise.

I also have some slight noise spinning the axles.

Made me think I might be due for bearings. Gonna do diff oil too, since close to 200k miles.

Should I clean them up? They do not seem glazed, and the inside of the rotors look good.

I can always hit them with some fine sandpaper if need be. Any thoughts on the slight noise in the video when I spin the axles?

AFAIK, provided that you don't drive with the E-brake engaged, they should last almost indefinitely.

Do both sides have that same rattly noise when turned? IIRC, your original noise complaint was on the driver's side, correct?

I can hear it on both sides, yes. Is one side louder? Perhaps.

My hearing is not the greatest.

I said drivers side because I had a coworker listen as I went forward and back at slow speed, braking, and they said louder drivers side.

Any wheel bearing I've ever seen go bad made noise almost constantly, that's what is confusing me a bit.

I guess I will know after replacing them.

And now that I've heard the noise, I'm kind of keyed in on it, if that makes sense.

I don't have enough experience with failed wheel bearings to comment on your video demo, although the bearings are an active component and should not be ignored, AFAIC.

AFAIK, typically, the front fails before the rear. When a front wheel bearing failed on an old truck of mine, many years ago, you could feel slop by reefing on the jacked-up wheel.

I don't know if the rear will present that feature and I would be looking for more evidence before making the effort of changing the bearings.

Could you borrow another set of ears to compare the noise intensity on each side?
I would expect there are members here who have the experience to comment on your video noise.

Unfortunately my truck is sitting on the lift, wheels, calipers, brackets, and abs sensors out of the way.

I was gonna service the diff at 200k anyway, and I'm at 192k now, so not too far off.

I have not pulled the front tires off yet, just to check. The noise, to me, did seem to be coming from the rear.

Additionally, I did replace both front hubs with OE about 40k miles ago.

I did post about the noise in the General Discussion subforum when I could not post here, but unfortunately I did not get comments about the noise in my video.

I will pull the front wheels and take a look at the brakes before I go further in on the rear, just in case.
